New on Netflix in December

Take a moment: four counts in, four counts out. Yes, it really is true… 2025 is slowly ticking away. But before you lovingly shove your calendar towards the recycling, Netflix treats us to a December full of new binges. Perfect for cozying up against the winter cold; or to subtly escape that Christmas brunch with the in-laws. I've already picked out the best movies and series for you, so your watchlist definitely won't come to an end.
The Revenant (December 1 on Netflix)
Maybe it's a good thing that real experts decide who wins the big film awards. Otherwise, we would just vote for the actors we like best; and not just for their acting skills. Leonardo DiCaprio should have had a shelf full of Oscars for years, but until 2015 that shelf remained painfully empty. The western drama ‘The Revenant’ finally changed that. DiCaprio plays the fur trapper Hugh Glass, who barely survives a brutal attack by a grizzly bear. His companions rob him, leave him for dead, and then one big mission is unleashed: revenge. And he got that revenge at the Academy too. Thanks to Netflix, we can now decide as a home jury whether that was justified. (Spoiler: probably yes, right?)
Love is Blind: Italy season 1 (December 1 on Netflix)
We have long lost our hearts to Italy; and secretly also a bit to ‘Love is Blind’ (hello, guilty pleasure). Those two may seem unrelated, but that is about to change. For the first time, Italian singles can claim their spot in the pods, and mamma mia, that promises something. The trailer is already packed with tears, outbursts, and romance… and the season hasn't even started yet. Get ready for fiery looks and dramatic hand gestures, in search of amore in ‘Love is Blind: Italy’.
The Holiday (December 2 on Netflix)
“Is it too early to watch ‘The Holiday’?” a friend asked me two weeks ago. My answer? No way, of course not; it's never too early for that. That movie is even delightful under the blazing sun. And now we have no excuse anymore: the classic is back on Netflix, so it's time for a semi-mandatory rewatch. We dive back into the house swap of Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) and their blossoming romances. We can now dream the storyline, but believe me: we are not complaining at all. We are more than happy to keep this December tradition alive. Is your hot chocolate ready?
Emily in Paris season 5 (December 18 on Netflix)
We had to hold back for another year, but now we can let loose: ‘Emily in Paris’ season 5 is finally here. This time, the croissants make way for focaccias; Emily swaps Paris for la dolce vita in Rome, where she will open a new office for Agence Grateau. A new city naturally means a lot of new impressions, also romantically. But don't worry, she will never be able to completely leave Paris behind. And that goes for Gabriel too. Drama incoming, but in perfect fashion.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (December 12 on Netflix)
Murder mysteries remain a favorite; you just have to know who the big culprit is. But to be honest, those stories are often a bit dark. Maybe that's why the Knives Out films are such a hit: amidst all the clues, there's always the necessary humor. Also in part 3: ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’. Daniel Craig is back as detective Benoit Blanc, and this time he has to tackle an impossible crime in a village church. And that might just be his most dangerous case yet. A Rotten Tomatoes score of 95 percent doesn't just happen, so expectations are high.
Innato season 1 (December 23 on Netflix)
Believe me, you can learn a lot from Netflix. A history lesson with a period piece, or a full language course with all those non-Dutch series. Time to brush up on our Spanish with the new thriller ‘Innato’; although that probably won't be the most important thing. Much more exciting is the question: what is really going on? Félix Garay (Imanol Arias), aka ‘the diesel killer’, is released from prison after years. For his daughter Sara (Elena Anaya), a respected psychologist, this means that her carefully built life is turned upside down. Especially when new murders suddenly occur in the city, which suspiciously resemble Félix's old methods. Sara thought she had left all the secrets behind… until now.
Goodbye June (December 24 on Netflix)
Kate Winslet in a film? You have our attention. Kate Winslet as a director? We're all ears. Her directorial debut means a Christmas gift for us in the form of ‘Goodbye June’; and let's hope there are also some tissues under the tree. In this film, we follow a group of siblings who find themselves in a difficult situation just before Christmas. Their mother June's health is rapidly declining, and the chance is high that they will lose her soon. While the family struggles with this sudden fate and tries to manage their rather annoying father, June keeps the reins firmly in her hands. This will be her farewell, exactly as she wants it. Christmas starts this year with a hefty dose of emotion. Be prepared.
Still some time left for more cozy movie nights? These titles are also coming this month.
