8 sentences that reveal a narcissist

You have probably experienced it: you have problems with a person and keep struggling with the question of what the cause is. Until you suddenly start googling ‘narcissism’ and that person ticks all twenty boxes. Or, as in my case, nineteen. I thought that ‘my’ narcissist didn't lie, until I discovered that they could lie so well that I hadn't noticed.

There are ways to recognize a narcissist. They often use sentences like these:

“You are too sensitive.”

→ Narcissists often minimize the feelings of others to justify their own behavior and make you doubt yourself (gaslighting).

“I am the only one who really understands you.”

→ They create a sense of exclusivity to make you dependent and discredit others in your life. That's also something narcissists like to do: isolate you from your loved ones so that you become more dependent.

“I never said that.”

→ This is a classic example of gaslighting: they twist the truth and make you doubt your own memories. Haven't you also had a boss who asked for green in the morning and, when you came back with green, casually said he had asked for purple?

“You make everything a problem.”

→ Narcissists deflect responsibility and make you seem like the ‘guilty’ one in every situation.

“Everyone thinks you are exaggerating.”

→ They try to suggest peer pressure, even when it doesn't exist, to make you feel small and insecure. And thus again that isolation: they make you feel insecure and doubt everything. Terrible.

“You can't manage without me.”

→ This is a form of manipulation to keep you dependent, so that you don't leave them.

“You are jealous of me.”

→ Narcissists project their own insecurities onto others and twist the situation so that they appear to be the victim.

“I only did it because I love you.”

→ This is often used to justify boundary-crossing behavior and maintain emotional control. Very, very dangerous.

I can give you only one piece of advice: don't walk, baby, run. Sources:Webmd.com Healthline.com
