Restaurants in Amersfoort: the 6 best hotspots

The charming town of Amersfoort: I was there last month and have already been back more than twice since then. Not only for the cozy center and the square full of terraces, but also for the little restaurants. What started as a day trip literally grew into a regular exploration. With the help of friends, family, and my own experiences, I have compiled a list of all the delicious restaurants you must try. From cozy bars to chic restaurants, here are my 6 favorite hotspots for your next visit to Amersfoort:
Het Lokaal – Local hotspot
First up: In an industrial space, you will find Het Lokaal, a place that is both a shop and a restaurant. What makes this concept so special? They only work with local products produced within a radius of 50 kilometers. Think of fresh bread and coffee (BOOT) from Baarn. It’s a great place for breakfast, lunch (also veggie) or a drink.
‘The best part? You can also participate in workshops for baking bread or making the perfect coffee, how fun. A low-key and affordable place for both locals and tourists in their own city.

Sterijn from Sterre & Steijn
Super fun: Brother and sister run Grand Café Sterijn (a combination of their names; Sterre and Steijn), a cozy and sustainable hotspot in the heart of Amersfoort. Here you can enjoy local dishes all day long, whether you feel like a drink or an extensive dinner. My tip: try the shared dining.
The atmosphere is warm and homely, and the cocktails are absolutely worth it (I speak from experience: don’t have too many). A perfect place to end the day or to linger over dinner.

Bergpaviljoen Bistronomique & Bar: Amersfoort but chic
If you are looking for something fancier, Bergpaviljoen is for you (and your partner). This restaurant is located on the outskirts of Amersfoort (note: Not in the center), surrounded by nature. They serve seasonal dishes inspired by French cuisine. The wine selection here is also extensive. Oh, and did you know that Bergpaviljoen Bistronomique also caters for your birthday dinner, anniversary, or company drinks? They simply bring their fresh products and natural atmosphere to your location.

MEI – Michelin Worthy hotspot
Looking for a Michelin-worthy experience? Then you need to go to MEI. Marjolein and Marco Blok have created a restaurant here where you can have a personal and intimate experience. The focus is on vegetables, herbs, and infusions, with the occasional piece of fish or meat. The dishes are refined and seasonal, such as marinated monkfish with eggplant and a fine sour broth of tomato and chamomile flower.
Note: Marjolein and Marco do everything themselves in their restaurant, reserve and discuss your wishes by phone before you want to eat there.

De Dolle Diva – Colorful drinks
Looking for something hip for you and your friends? De Dolle Diva is one of the most colorful and lively bars in Amersfoort. It’s not just about the cocktails here, but about the total experience. Think: flowers, pink, girly, and disco, yup you have to go here in style too. You can eat something delicious, but it’s also a perfect place to have drinks after or before going out #woeeepppwoeepp.

De Saffraan – The best of the best
As the cherry on top and so Last but not least: For those looking for luxury, De Saffraan is a must-visit. This restaurant, which had a Michelin star from 2010 to 2014, offers an unforgettable culinary experience. Chef Kars van Wechem and his team work daily with fresh, local ingredients to create the perfect dishes.
They even have their own vegetable garden for fresh herbs and work with suppliers who offer the best from outside the Netherlands. Here you don’t just eat, nope, you experience the gastronomy full of creativity and craftsmanship.
