The reason to regularly check your car insurance

Everyone with a car knows it: you MUST have car insurance. At least a liability insurance, just to cover the damage to others if you ever cause an accident. But it doesn't stop there. Many people take out such insurance and never look at it again. And that's a shame, because your situation changes, insurers come up with new things, and your claim-free years can save you quite a bit. So why not check every now and then if you're still well covered?
A lot is changing quietly in your life
Moved? New job? Baby on the way? There's a good chance your car insurance no longer fits perfectly. Maybe you're suddenly driving more kilometers or you want extra coverage for replacement transport because you really don't want to stand by the side of the road with a crying toddler. Also, if you regularly drive across the border, for example towards Germany, it's smart to check if you're well insured for that. You really don't have to puzzle for hours, just take a quick look to see if everything still matches how you live and drive now.
Insurers are also not sitting still
The world is changing, and that also applies to car insurance. Perhaps there is now a better deal available or options have been added that better fit how you use your car. Not every insurance, for example, automatically covers glass damage. And maybe you've been paying for something you don't even use for years. By taking a quick look around, or giving your insurer a call, you can often save money or ensure that you do get what you need if something happens. Especially now comparing car insurance is so easy online, it's really no longer a chore.
Claim-free years are worth their weight in gold
The longer you drive without damage, the cheaper your premium becomes. At least, if your claim-free years are well recorded. And that's where things can sometimes go wrong. Sometimes they are not properly transferred when you switch to another insurer. Or suddenly there is a claim recorded that isn't yours at all. Such mistakes can cost you unnecessary money. So checking every now and then if those years are recorded correctly can seriously affect your monthly premium.
Checking can yield you quite a bit
Insurers all work a little differently. While one gives a small discount for your claim-free years, you might suddenly be much cheaper with another. So it really pays off to check how you're doing every now and then. It might take you ten minutes, but it could save you dozens of euros a month. Nice, right?
Check every quarter
The advice? Look at your insurance at least once a quarter. Not because you have to, but because you're doing yourself a favor. Just check if your coverage is still correct, if you can save somewhere, and if those claim-free years have been properly accounted for. Small effort, big difference.
