This classic is the secret to the perfect bun

By

Slick back bun, messy bun, balletcore bun. Yes… we’ve seen a lot of buns come and go, and there are all sorts of tools to secure them as best as possible. Do you remember the donut bun? Hold on to your seat, because there’s something new to add: spiral hairpins are the secret to a securely held bun.

Oh, uh – is a bell ringing? That could very well be… Correction: this golden oldie is the new tool you need to try out.

What are spiral hairpins and what do they do?

The spiral hairpins, also known as spin pins are going completely viral on TikTok. They are hairpins in the shape of a spiral, designed so you can easily twist them into your hair. Due to their shape, they hold your hair securely, preventing it from going anywhere.

Where can you buy them?

Well, pretty much everywhere. At Bowl, Amazon, Boozyshop, Douglas – you even have a dtransparent Invisibobble set of these handy helpers at Zalando.

Okay, why did they go out of style then?

As seen in all trend cycles; there are trends that come and go. So too the spin pins. It all started in 1901 when New Zealander Ernest Godward made the first spiral hairpin. Since then, the pin has seen peaks and valleys, like before the 00s and in the 2010s. You saw them in that last year all over Buzzfeed, DIY YouTubers (really a lot) and in Tumblr-Tutorials. Wow. I haven’t heard that in one sentence for a long time: Buzzfeed and Tumblr. That’s why you probably recognize these from your youth, because everything comes back in. Why these handy pins have gone ‘out of style’ is a mystery. I think it has faded away, just like all other trends in the 2010s.

We’re stepping away from the YouTube era (when we only worried about homework, Jenna Marbles, and Wattpad) and coming back to the present. Because as I said, these pins have fortunately found their way back into the current trend circuit.

How do spiral hairpins work?

Yes, about 315 thousand people were also curious about that. That many views the video from TikToker Yana received. Take a deep breath, because this is not a complicated technique where you need a thousand pins and end up crying on the floor because your messy bun has failed again. This doesn’t require higher mathematics: you just twist them into your hair, like a screw.

Step 1: Form the bun

Start with the shape of your bun. It can be however you want: high on your head, low, tight in a slick bun, or messy with a bunch of little hairs sticking out. Either way: throw that hair up and hold it in place.

Step 2: Twist the pins in

Hold the bun with one hand and twist the spiral into the bun with your other hand. Start at the base of the bun. You twist it in clockwise, and the spin pin does its job: as the spirals grab your hair, the hair in your bun gets mixed with the rest of your hair on your scalp. That’s the secret: you can shake as much as you want, but all the hair is pressed together and stays in place.

Step 3: Add another one

For the best result, use at least two, on both sides. This way, the bun is secured all around. Want even more security? Then you can also put one on top and one underneath. Whether that feels good… don’t quote us on that – that’s at your own risk.

Actually, it’s very simple, but that’s the secret to a bun that really doesn’t come loose. Test it yourself: go to pilates, play a game of mini-golf, or let loose in a rage room where you smash everything to bits with a sledgehammer. Whatever you do: this bun doesn’t move. Now let’s hope this trend doesn’t disappear again quickly.
