Attention: this mega-popular hairstyle makes you bald

It is no secret that my style icon is Hailey Bieber. I can hardly shout it from the rooftops. Whether it's her manicure, her wardrobe, her own makeup line; there's a good chance I'll copy and paste it straight onto myself. The same goes for the slicked back bun. Together with Sofia Richie Grainge, she and Hailey herself have ensured that many (including me) have developed a sort of addiction to this sleek hairstyle. According to experts, we should stop this quickly. That tight classy bun just makes us extremely bald.
Recently, Sofia posted a tutorial on TikTok explaining how she creates her signature ‘lazy girl bun’. She didn’t do this with hair that was already five days old, but with freshly washed hair. On her wet hair, she first applies a hair mask. Not just a small scoop, no, just half the jar. According to Sofia, wet hair helps everything stay in place better. Okay, fair enough. Then she brushes the whole mess back and secures it with an elastic. Oh, and let’s not forget another tiny bit of hair mask and some oil to make it nice and shiny. Don’t get me wrong: it looks beautiful, really. I’ll also confess that I’ve tried it myself a few times, just like all the other beauty gurus on TikTok. But soon the red flags and criticism from experts about this viral hairstyle came up.

First of all: wet hair. It’s no secret that soaking wet hair is extra fragile and that you should do very little with it until it’s dry. Brushing it back as tightly as possible and securing it with an elastic is therefore absolutely NOT the best care for your long locks, you understand that. The repeated tension on the hair follicles can cause them to be pulled out. In other words: hair loss, thinner hair, or bald spots. No one is waiting for that.
Now, that’s not immediately the case if you decide to wear a tight ponytail or bun once or twice a week; only when you put your hair in an elastic at least three times a week should you start worrying about bald patches. To take care of the hair at the same time, many (including Sofia) use a hair mask so that your hairstyle can marinate nicely all day. That’s good for the hair, on one condition: that the mask actually works nourishing and hydrating for the hair. Restorative hair masks are better avoided in your slick-back, as their ingredients can irritate your scalp rather than care for it, which can also lead to hair loss. Always check the label.
Oh, and whatever you do: definitely do not use an elastic band with a metal edge, because then you are just asking for broken points. It is recommended to use a soft hair elastic made of satin.
Is it too late and are you walking around with bald spots? No worries: with you can grab these products very soon: you’ll have your long locks back in no time.
