Amazon Prime intervenes after this Instagram post

It's been a long time since I've been so hooked on a series like The Summer I Turned Pretty. The creators of Amazon Prime play very cleverly into the binge-hunger of people like me – and there are many of us – by dropping a new episode every Wednesday. The result? We are lying in wait for our new shot of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah for six days, wagging our tails and drooling. And in the meantime, we ask each other if we are Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty for beginners

The series, based on the books by Jenny Han, revolves around the love triangle between the main character Belly (played by Lola Tung) and the brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).

Belly spent every summer as a little girl in the summer house (which is now also your dream house, believe me) in Cousins. The house belongs to Susannah, Belly's mother's best friend Laurel. Susannah has two sons: Jeremiah and Conrad. And Belly has a big weakness for both – and they for her. After a relationship with Conrad, she ultimately ends up with Jeremiah, with whom she suddenly wants to marry very quickly.

Team Conrad or team Jeremiah?

That is the question now that the series is heading towards the finale. Jeremiah has proposed to Belly and the gas pedal towards the altar is being pressed hard. As a viewer, you wonder where that urgency comes from: they are young, they have a whole life ahead of them. Yet both Belly and Jeremiah feel that once they are married, the door to Conrad is forever closed.

But then – SPOILER ALERT – everything is thrown into disarray. During Jeremiah's bachelor party, someone tells Conrad that his brother cheated on Belly during a trip with his year club to Mexico. For Conrad, it's the moment to ask Belly if she is sure where her heart lies, and to say that he will always love her. The air castle begins to wobble.

And yesterday – another spoiler – Jeremiah decided at the last moment not to marry Belly because he felt that she never looked at him the way she looks at Conrad. Fans are angry: at Jeremiah, at Belly, actually at everyone. Because yes, she leaves both brothers hanging. And sometimes she says, in an attempt to push Conrad away, things that are downright painful.

Instagram is angry

Or rather: the fans on Instagram are angry. The accounts of Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno are flooded with hate comments and even death threats.

Lola Tung herself responded with a plea to fans to stop threatening: “I promise you, it's not worth it.” For Amazon Prime was the last straw. On all official social media channels of the series, a video message appeared with the text: “The summer we started behaving normally online.” A clear nod to the title of the show – and a serious reminder to the fans.
