These are the destinations for that perfect late summer trip

Officially we still have until the end of September, but let's be honest: summer is really over now. Just because we are all returning to the office doesn't mean it's too late for a last-minute getaway. Those who put in a little effort can score the best deals just after the high season. To help you on your way, Lonely Planet made a list of the best destinations for your ultimate late summer trip. This way, you don't have to think about those falling leaves just yet.

New York to do's

A trip to the US

If you have the space for something more than a weekend away? Then this is the moment for that trip to the US. From September, flight prices will start to drop again, allowing you to cross the ocean ‘cheaper’. In such a large country, there are of course endless destinations to choose from, but we will make some suggestions. Hawaii is probably on many wish lists, and that's not without reason. Thanks to the combination of crystal-clear water and volcanic mountains, you really step into another world. If you're looking for mountains but with slightly cooler temperatures, head to Alaska; specifically the town of Anchorage. Surrounded by nature, but also close to various shops and museums so you definitely won't get bored.

The state of Montana is also a recommendation around this time. Right now, the days are warm, but the evenings are pleasantly cool. Especially the hikers and cyclists among us will love it here. One last tip: Austin, Texas. With autumn approaching, the music scene there is really starting to pick up again, and the many local bars are a must-visit.

Athens (Greece)

For Greece, the flight prices also drop significantly from September. Now that the summer crowds are disappearing and the temperatures are becoming milder, the capital Athens comes back to life. The locals are back from their own trips, giving you the chance to really get to know the culture. For the major sights like the Parthenon, it is still wise to book in advance. But there is certainly enough room to wander aimlessly through the city and be surprised. Be sure to add Philopappos Hill to your list. There you really have the best view over the city.

Rome (Italy)

Rome is always a good idea, in our opinion. A small warning: there's a good chance it will still be quite busy here in late summer. A bit less than in high season, and that's a win. For guaranteed sunshine, you're also in the right place, and that goes for the romantic atmosphere and of course the delicious food (that's reason enough). Despite the many fellow travelers, you should definitely not miss hotspots like the Colosseum. Just imagine all the people gone. It has to be done, but ideally, you wouldn't book a return ticket at all. Even more Rome tips? May has plenty of lists ready for you.

Vienna (Austria)

Is it going to be a getaway with your lover? Then Vienna is the perfect destination. Just imagine: walking hand in hand along the Danube. Romantic, right? Or how about sipping a glass of wine at one of the many vineyards? Vienna is the only capital in the world with vineyards within the city, so that's definitely going to be a unique experience. Art lovers can indulge in the various museums, and of course, Schönbrunn Palace, the famous palace of Empress Sissi. That one should definitely not be missed.

Barcelona (Spain)

I speak from experience when I say that Barcelona is extremely busy in high season. It's so bad that the locals are completely fed up and take to the streets with water guns. I managed to stay dry, but in that regard, I should have postponed my trip until late summer. The atmosphere is not only much more relaxed then, but you also pay less for your stay. This way, there's more left for the important things, like the many tapas you'll eat. If possible, plan your trip around September 23. That's when La Mercè starts, a festival in honor of the patron saint of Barcelona. The streets will be filled with music, parades, dance, and fireworks. That's already a reason to book.

Mexico

Mexico City (Mexico)

Looking for a destination that's a bit further from home? Then Mexico City is definitely worth considering. Here too, the locals are just returning from their own vacations, which means the streets are bustling again. You can endlessly wander around the many markets and enjoy truly authentic street food. Want to really feel one with the locals? Make sure you're there on September 16, Mexican Independence Day. Everyone gathers en masse at Zócalo Square for parades and fireworks shows. And that's quite different from our Liberation Day.

Seoul (South Korea)

When it comes to tickets to Asia, there are sometimes moments when you need to strike. That is now the case for Seoul, the capital of South Korea. If you think we are modern here in the Netherlands, then a whole new world opens up for you there. The city is ahead of just about everything, especially in terms of architecture and beauty treatments. It is also the heart of K-pop culture. No objection to slightly cooler weather? Then you should plan your trip around October 6. That day, Koreans celebrate Chuseok, an important harvest festival. You can compare it a bit to Thanksgiving. The perfect opportunity to taste Korean cuisine.

Mumbai (India)

The most unique destination on the list is Mumbai in India. For a last-minute trip, it may not be ideal, but you can always remember it for next September. It's important to remind yourself in time. This city is bursting with highlights. Afternoon tea at the Taj Mahal Palace, staring at the Gateway of India, one of the largest monuments, or a spiritual trip to Haji Ali Dargah, a shrine that floats in the Arabian Sea. In India, various cuisines come together, and as a foodie, you can embark on your own discovery tour. Don't forget to try the Parsi cuisine. One downside: around this time, it can rain a lot in India. So if you want to escape the typical Dutch weather, another period might be better to book.
