These new horror films and series will make your Halloween complete

By
Three girlfriends sit on the sofa, looking tight-lipped and startled, while watching a horror film or series on Halloween.

While we are secretly busy expanding our Christmas bauble collection (you can never start too early) and filling our watchlist with sugary sweet Christmas romances, there is another holiday coming up: Halloween. And I get it, not everyone feels like walking around with a plastic witch nose. But a creepy movie night? That’s the way to celebrate it anyway. Have you seen all the horror classics yet? Then I have good news. Just before the spooky season reaches its peak, some gems are coming out. And with these new horror films and series, your Halloween will be completely filled.

Abadi Nan Jaya (October 23 on Netflix)

In the world of horror, zombie films are a category of their own. These creatures seem to crawl straight out of your worst nightmare. After watching the new Indonesian horror film ‘Abadi Nan Jaya’ (The Elixir), you will definitely want to leave a few lights on for a couple of nights. The story revolves around a rather dysfunctional family that runs an herbal medicine company. To keep innovating, the owner comes up with a new recipe, but it completely spirals out of control. The drink causes a zombie outbreak that floods the entire village. As the zombies spread, the tension within the family also rises. They will have to put their drama on pause to save their own lives (and those of the village). And the danger comes from all sides.

Weapons (October 24 on HBO Max)

The spooky season started early this year. No sultry romance, but a grim horror film was the box office hit of the summer. And for those who found it just a bit too scary back then (because honestly, such a gigantic screen doesn’t help): ‘Weapons’ is now coming to HBO Max; just in time for Halloween. In this mysterious film, teacher Justine’s (Julia Garner) class is completely empty one morning. Except for one student: Alex (Cary Christopher). All his classmates ran out of their houses at exactly 02:17 that night, and since then there has been no trace of them. Through the eyes of different characters, you slowly discover who – or what – is behind this. And believe me: it’s a lot more gruesome than you could ever imagine.

Meat Day (October 25 on Prime Video)

Who thought that only foreign countries could make brutal horror films is mistaken. ‘Meat Day’ is Dutch, bloody, and perhaps the most intense on this entire list. The film is not announced for nothing as “the bloodiest Dutch horror film ever”; sixty liters of fake blood, to be precise. The story revolves around Mirthe (Caro Derkx), an environmental activist who protests at a pig slaughterhouse with her fellow activists. What starts as an idealistic statement quickly turns into a nightmare when the farming family decides to strike back. From that moment on, no one’s life is safe anymore. Only watch if you have a strong stomach…

IT: Welcome to Derry (October 27 on HBO Max)

Is one horror film not enough? Then you’re good with ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ for now; your Halloween is guaranteed to be filled. The title gives it away: Pennywise is back, and yes, he’s still just as terrifying. The series is a prequel and dives into the story before the well-known films in nine episodes. Finally, we get an answer to that one question: where does Pennywise come from? An African-American family moves to the town of Derry, where the reception is anything but warm. When the children finally manage to make some local friends, they discover that something much darker lurks in the town. Children disappear without a trace, and fear takes over the village. Will they manage to stop the evil before it strikes again? This first season is just the beginning; three more seasons are planned that go further back in time. One thing is for sure: we’re not done with Pennywise for a while…

Play Dead (October 31 on Canal+)

Okay, Canal+ may not be the first streaming service that comes to mind, but for horror lovers, it’s definitely worth it this Halloween. On October 31, the new horror film ‘Play Dead’ will be released there. A young woman, Alison (Paula Brasca), wakes up injured in a basement; surrounded by corpses. Occasionally, a masked man enters, with yet another new victim over his shoulder. Alison’s only chance to survive? Pretend to be dead, hoping to come up with an escape plan. But the longer she lies there, the clearer it becomes that something even more gruesome is happening above that basement. It’s still a question of whether Alison can escape in time. A quiet movie night is definitely not in the cards. Happy Halloween!
