It's trouble in paradise at Disney+; not because things are so bad for all the titles right now, but it's kind of how you can describe their latest acquisition. For the thriller ‘Paradise’ is anything but idyllic. In this mystery series, the assassination of the US president turns the entire community upside down. The further the investigation gets, the more we discover that really everyone has a lot to hide.

Did he want revenge?

Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) has been working as chief security officer for US President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) for five years. When he unsuspectingly starts a new shift, he finds the president dead in his bedroom. Bradford turns out to be murdered and important documents were stolen from his safe. Since the security guard was the last person to see him alive, he automatically becomes one of the suspects. It also does not really help that the relationship between the two has not been particularly good in recent years. Indeed, Collins sees the president as one of those responsible for his wife's death. After an interrogation and lie detector, he is sent home; he is no longer allowed to appoint himself to the case. But Collins certainly has no intention of just waiting quietly. Risking his own life, he starts his own investigation. In his search for the killer, he discovers a huge web of lies and (political) secrets.

A complicated puzzle

Murder cases are actually intricate puzzles of clues and connections. ‘Paradise’ is that too, but one of a thousand pieces. As in ‘This is Us’, screenwriter and creator Dan Fogelman chooses to play considerably with time in this series too. While the murder investigation is in full swing in the present, we continuously make trips back in history. In all these flashbacks, we learn more and more about the pasts of the various characters and their complicated interrelationships. Everyone is linked in some way and has their own reasons why they might have something to do with the case. Each episode gives you a few new pieces of the puzzle, and so, with a little help from cliffhangers, makes you want to keep watching. Despite only having three episodes to watch, the series has been in the Disney+ top 3 since its release. Its thick enough rating of an 8 on both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, further confirms this success. And although no second season has officially been confirmed yet, the makers already have plans for a continued. Until then, we can get stuck into this murder mystery; a new episode will appear every Tuesday.

‘Paradise’ can now be seen on Disney+.
