By

With a title like ‘Night Always Comes’, you already know you’re in for a dark story. The thriller label confirms that, so buckle up for an intense ride. And it takes you straight to the Netflix top. In this new crime hit, Lynette is pushed to her limits to protect her family. A not-so-subtle question for us as viewers: how far would you go for your family?

This is what awaits you in Night Always Comes

Lynette (Vanessa Kirby) lives with her mother Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and brother Kenny (Zack Gottsagen) in the house where she also grew up as a child. But now the family is threatened with eviction; unless they can buy the property. Lynette can’t raise the money on her own, so she desperately needs her mother. But her mother decides to spend her share last minute on a car, putting the crucial deal in jeopardy. With only 24 hours until the deadline, Lynette must do everything she can to gather the missing twenty-five thousand dollars. With every step, she takes more and more risks, pushing her further back into her dark past. Lynette is willing to go very far for her family, but is it enough?

The book and the author behind Night Always Comes

Anyone familiar with thriller novels might already know the story of ‘Night Always Comes’. The film is based on the eponymous book by Willy Vlautin. The author started as a musician and singer in the band ‘Richmond Fontaine’ and achieved great success with eleven albums and various world tours. In the meantime, he also wrote several books. Thus, Vlautin is not new to the world of films; his novels ‘The Motel Life’ and ‘Lean on Pete’ have already been adapted into films. He was not very involved in the development of these projects. The filmmakers had his full trust and were allowed to tell their own story; and that was also the case this third time. With a new band ‘The Delines’, Vlautin continues as a musician, and as a writer, he doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Who knows, there may be more of his stories coming to streaming services.

The harsh reality behind the thriller

As is typical for a thriller, ‘Night Always Comes’ is primarily exciting to watch. But the creators wanted more than just to provide a fun movie night. With this story, director Benjamin Caron hopes to make his viewers think about the economic problems in the US. According to him, having three jobs, like Lynette, is sometimes not even enough to make ends meet; and that realization is not always there. “Lynette’s story represents millions of people who are just one or two paychecks away from disaster. Of course, the film falls into the thriller genre, but I also wanted to convey the idea that nurses, caregivers, or anyone else, are being priced out of the cities that they keep running.” Caron hopes that this will lead people to view poverty differently. Those who end up on the streets do not always deal with drugs or crime.

How Vanessa Kirby carries Night Always Comes

An interesting story is one thing, but the actors still have to convey it well. ‘Night Always Comes’ had one big stroke of luck: Vanessa Kirby. Her performance pulls you into the film and makes you need to know if her character will make it. The actress not only plays the role of Lynette but also worked as a producer. Overall, it’s a busy time for Kirby. Besides this project, she was also working around the same time on ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, which is still in theaters. Now that the promotion for that is coming to an end, she can immediately focus on the next title: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Filming has just begun, and the movie is scheduled for next year. An important detail in all of this: Kirby is currently also pregnant with her first child, which will certainly not make this busy work schedule any easier. Hats off.

What Vanessa Kirby has in common with her character

With Lynette’s character, one thing is clear: she is willing to go very far for the people around her. She may not always make the safest choices, but the caring nature is in her. And Vanessa Kirby has that trait as well. During the promotion of ‘The Fantastic Four’, she was very close with actor Pedro Pascal. With physical touches, the two sought each other out often, which raised questions: Kirby is pregnant and clearly in a relationship, so why is her co-star allowed to do this? The reason: Pascal suffers from anxiety, and a touch from someone he trusts helps him with that. So there’s nothing romantic behind it; Kirby wanted to support her colleague and friend, even though it led to various rumors and questions for her. She did what she had to do for the people around her; just like Lynette, although in her case it is a bit more extreme. ‘Night Always Comes’ is now available on Netflix.
