Weekend in Valencia - this is your ultimate to-do list

Last year I flew to Valencia for a long weekend and the first thing I thought when I stepped out was: uhhh, why don’t I live here yet? And that while my suitcase wasn’t even unzipped. The nice thing about this city? Although I would want to live here or at least stay for a month, a long weekend already gives you a complete I’m-recharged sensation. A few days is already enough to fall in love – with the culture, the food, the people, that relaxed med-vibe and actually just with that whole Spanish lifestyle that you effortlessly adopt as soon as you’re there.

Do you have a free weekend coming up and want to do something that feels like a vacation, but without the stress of planning a big trip? Something that feels a bit like you’re temporarily local in the sunniest part of Spain? Then Valencia is exactly what you’re looking for. And lucky you: I have put together the ultimate to-do list for you, so you don’t miss anything in the city. Welcome to Valenciaaa.

For the culture buffs in Valencia

If your heart races at the thought of a good museum and a touch of history – same – then you’re in the right place in Valencia. This city is a paradise for culture nerds who love a cutting-edge and classic vibe (and the best part: it’s also Insta-worthy).

My very first must-see tip is La Lonja de la Seda. This is a Gothic gem and UNESCO World Heritage site. Once this was – and yes, I just dove into my old history book for you – the bustling center of the silk trade. During this walk through the heart of Valencia, you stroll past history, delights, and hidden gems – from elegant ceramics to vintage markets – exactly that charming, non-touristy atmosphere that makes your heart race (and your camera work overtime). The tour lasts about two hours, you can get your tickets on site and it is also accessible for people with limited mobility (always a plus). Bonus point: you can here also arrange your Valencia Tourist Card for unlimited travel on public transport and discounts on various must see gems.

Not a fan of endless walking – believe me, I get it – then the Museo de Bellas Artes might be for you. Here you see masterpieces by famous painters. It is the second largest art gallery in Spain (yes really) and especially the Gothic and Renaissance halls are next level beautiful.

OH, and now my favorite cultural sniff moment: Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. Does this mean anything to you? Think: opera, concerts, and theater in a mega large and beautiful building. It looks just like a spaceship from the outside, but believe me – inside it is enchanting. Whether you’re going for a classic opera or an open-air concert under the starry sky: it’s all to be found here.

Weekend in Valencia: eat and drink like a local

Valencia is a true paradise for all foodies among us. But: what does the perfect day look like in terms of food? Here you can find more about the food in Valencia, but I’ll put together my go-to eating day below:

First up: start your day with a traditional esmorzaret — the late breakfast moment where Valencians swear by a well-filled sandwich, a beer (yes, before noon, haha) and above all: lots of flavors and no rush. Where should you go for such a well-filled late breakfast? At these temples you eat the best and most local: Bar Central (with not one but two Michelin stars) and Restaurant Puerta del Mar, right in the bustling center are nice options. But my ultimate favorite? That would be Maremar, with a view of the sea at the beautiful Pinedo Beach.

For lunch, an authentic paella should of course not be missing – the city is known for it. My mouth waters just thinking about the restaurant where I had it: El Coso Del Mar (with a view of the beach). Of course, you can also go all-in and learn how to make this divine dish yourself. Want to unleash your inner paella chef? Here you can find all the information about culinary experiences.

End your day with a refreshing Agua de Valencia on one of the many terraces. Sounds like filtered water from the sea, I know, but it is anything but that. It is the most famous cocktail of Valencia, made with fresh orange juice, vodka, gin, cava, and sometimes a bit of sugar. The nicest terraces to drink this sunny drink? In the old city center Ciutat Vella you sit the coziest – and most among the locals.

A whole weekend shopping in style in Valencia

Who here is a shopaholic? MEEE! And I’m sure I’m not the only one. Fortunately, shopping in Valencia is really a party – and I don’t just mean the big brands (they are of course there too), but especially the hidden gems where you rummage among the locals and score something just a bit more original. When people ask you ‘Wow, where did you get that blouse?’, you don’t have to say ‘Zara’, but can just say: ‘Oh, from a boutique in Valencia.’ Want to see which shopping spots are really a must? Check it out here.

A must? The Mercado de Tapinería, where art, clothing, and tapas come together in a cozy setting - a snack break while shopping? Say no more. And don't forget the Plaza Redonda – a round square full of typical Valencian products, handicrafts, and lots of atmosphere. Leave some space in your suitcase, because Valencia is the kind of city where you suddenly find you need an extra dress, ring, or ceramic vase. You get it.

At the end of your weekend in Valencia? Hola nightlife

For those who don't have a Spanish Duolingo streak of 280 – yup – this means halloooo nightlife. I actually don't remember much of it myself – and how could I? – I think I had a bit too much of that Agua de Valencia before we took the taxi there. The nice thing about Valencia? Most nightlife options are open all year round. Here you will find all the fun nightlife options in Valencia.

An all-time favorite – and yes: also among the locals? La Casa de la Mar. The best part? It's only 100 meters from the beach (YAY). It's the hotspot for music and – yes, for those who love it – beer. And... do you know that feeling you get after one alcoholic drink when you want a big, fat burger? Well, they have that here too (with truffle!!!). Fun DJs often play here and overall there's just a great vibe.

Want to experience nightlife at its chicest? Then you have to go to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias From June to September, L’Umbracle there is the place to be: a festive outdoor terrace with palm trees, lights, and outfits that make you want to put on your heels spontaneously. Want to dance? Club Mya is your go-to there. And an insider tip from a friend (who experienced Valencia sober).

Are you going for an evening among thelocals? Then go to Café del Duende. Small, local, but really a cozy spot to have a beer and pick up a bit of Spanish.

Flying to Valencia is also just a matter of watching three episodes of your favorite series and you're there, so you officially have no reason not to go. Check this website if you don't want to miss anything from the city.
