Why you should never sleep with wet hair

Don't lie, you've also jumped into bed with wet hair at some point. Or you do it very occasionally just like I still do out of convenience. After a night out, I find nothing more delightful than standing under the shower for a bit longer and washing all the beer (and smoke) out of my hair. But don't think that I take the time to blow-dry that hairstyle at four in the morning. That's just a step too far for me, so I end up in bed with dripping wet locks. I knew it wasn't the most ideal scenario for my hair, but I hadn't been told that it was so bad for my scalp.

Ever woken up with hair that smelled a bit musty? Not in the sense that it really stank, but that shampoo from the night before didn't smell as strong as usual. Well, then not only has your pillow become a breeding ground for bacteria, but those bacteria have also gathered in your hair, which can lead to mold.

Here's the deal: wet hair dries less quickly in the open air than it does when blow-drying. When you're lying on a pillow, this drying process slows down even more, making it a perfect place for bacteria to thrive. It only needs to happen often enough, and it can really become a serious problem. You'll get dandruff, it will itch, and there will be a build-up of products that can even start to smell. Oh yes, and your hair will start to fall out. In short: you want to avoid this.

In the worst case, you can get ringworm. Or well, that sounds very dramatic. There is no actual worm involved; it got this name because of the red round spots it causes. But before this happens, you really have to go overboard. This only happens if you sleep with wet hair multiple times a week and the fungi have had enough time to transport themselves through your hair to the tissue.

One more thing, and then I'll stop, okay? If you suffer from migraines, you definitely don't want to dive into bed with wet hair. It can restrict air circulation in your head, which can lead to cold headaches. Sounds terrible, it is.

I'll postpone showering until the next morning from now on.
