You don't have to spend thousands of hours in college. A university degree is not required. What am I saying? For this job, you need both your hands and a dose of common sense. Type in “www.omscholing’…

Our RTL news reported today that the training to become a plumber is being stormed by enthusiasts. Not because everyone suddenly wants to work with drains and laying pipes, but because it earns you a handsome salary as a self-employed person. And often, you don't even have to work a whole day for it.

To burst out laughing

Suddenly, the words ‘I've never done it before, so I think I can do it’ shoot through my mind. Which is of course the biggest nonsense, because a decent plumber has stacks of experience and solutions in the toolbox to fix all kinds of blockages and leaks. With that knowledge and skill, I don't even come close with my writing. Although I wouldn't say no to a day of internship with the expert.

It makes me chuckle inwardly, this rush. The profession that people sometimes (wrongly) look down on turns out to yield more than the workday of a starting lawyer. And I haven't even mentioned the costs that a lawyer incurred to get to that point. If I were a plumber, I would at least be rolling on the floor laughing at four o'clock in the afternoon at home with this news.

Incompetent monkeys

Why is it suddenly so lucrative? Because we, the rest of the incompetent monkeys, have no idea how to tighten something with a water pump pliers. Is the chiffon leaking? Then we panic call the first plumber we can find or start clicking wildly in a list of online providers. And if your bathroom suddenly floods, then it's also an emergency, and that adds extra to the plumbers' bill. It's simple. If demand is greater than supply, prices go up. You don't need a graduated economist for that; that calculation is easily made with common sense.

Maybe this is exactly the right back at ya that was needed in our society. With always the condescending attitude towards skilled workers and vocational training jobs. Just to make us realize how important these professions are. And the fact that they are rolling on the floor laughing while sending invoices is a nice bonus.
