If there is one thing I can always look forward to, it’s vacations. Close that laptop and hop on that plane; time for relaxation. Although we now plan our trips so full that we actually don’t come back really rested. You’d almost have to plan a second vacation to recover from the first. Good news for everyone who really wants to unwind: the quietcation is the new travel trend.

Really relax for a moment

Before we dive completely into that quietcation, first an important difference: it is not the same as quiet vacationing. In that case, you pack your bags without telling your boss, and you still work during your trip if it’s really necessary. A quietcation is a bit different; it’s actually a silent vacation. No panic, this doesn’t mean you can’t talk. It’s about consciously seeking out peace. The focus is on mindful traveling and escaping the busy daily life for a while. No hectic city trips and tourist hotspots, but rather a cottage somewhere in nature. This also means that you don’t have to plan your days down to the minute with all sorts of activities. If you do plan something, it should also be meant to relax; for example, take a long walk or go meditate. You might first think of popular and often busy places when considering a vacation destination, but there is still plenty of choice for a quietcation. You could participate in a retreat in Thailand, book a cottage in the French Alps, or look for something closer to home in the Veluwe. Every country has its quiet spots; you just might have to search a bit longer. Taking a nice vacation picture is always allowed, but otherwise, the idea is to put your phone away as much as possible. Get away from all those stimuli and be in the now, all for that total relaxation.

Still getting used to it

Especially if you normally travel with a list of places to visit, this trend will take some getting used to. It can also feel a bit uncomfortable, but according to psychotherapist Stacian Watts, that’s completely normal. Nowadays, we are actually always surrounded by sounds, and with our phones and laptops at hand, we are continuously reachable for others. When that suddenly disappears on a quietcation, it can feel a bit strange. Give it some time, and you’ll notice that it’s actually quite nice. You can really recharge and sort out your thoughts. According to research, the rest and silence of such a vacation have even more benefits: it can help lower your blood pressure, improve your sleep, reduce worrying, and it also stimulates your creativity. Full of new ideas and energy, you step back onto the plane. Quite a good trend, right?
