Do you know that? Your relationship seems perfect on paper, but something is gnawing at you. No big arguments, no drama, but those little doubts. That one message you keep rereading, that conversation you prefer to postpone to avoid trouble. Those subtle signals are often hard to place, but sometimes say more than you think. Fortunately, dating experts have found something to help you: the CARRP test. The socials love it, and that's for a reason. This method helps you zoom out for a moment and look honestly at your relationship and can tell you surprisingly much about your future together.

What does the CARRP test mean for your relationship?

CARRP stands for: Consistency, Availability, Reliability, Responsiveness, and Predictability. In Dutch, that means Consistentie, Beschikbaarheid, Betrouwbaarheid, Responsiviteit, and Voorspelbaarheid. It is a kind of checklist that helps you assess your relationship in the long term, especially regarding emotional safety and the match between you. It revolves around the characteristics that provide that feeling of stability, trust, and safety in a relationship. According to dating coach Julie Nguyen, these are much more important factors for a strong bond than just that initial spark. The focus shifts from the excitement of your connection to how sustainable it really is. You look at patterns in your partner: How does someone communicate, especially when things get tough? And when it really matters, is the other person truly reliable?

Before we tell you how to test your lover against the CARRP test and what this means for the future of your relationship, let's first dive into the meaning of those loose letters. C, A, R, R, P: what do they actually mean?

Consistency – Consistentie

A relationship is already quite a rollercoaster, so you don't want a partner who flies off in all directions. By consistency, we mean someone who is reliable in both behavior and communication. No sudden peaks or valleys, no fluctuating attention. “Their interest, commitment, and availability remain stable, so you don't have to guess where you stand,” says Nguyen. That stability provides emotional safety, so you don't have to be constantly on guard.

Availability – Beschikbaarheid

For a relation You have to make an effort, that's simple. You can assume that you rank high on your partner's priority list, and vice versa, of course. If the other person is truly available, they make space for you in their life and act accordingly. They take the time to make plans and initiate. But it goes further than that. Availability also has an emotional aspect: being open to vulnerable conversations and going deeper. You are not a side issue; your relationship truly matters.

Reliability (Betrouwbaarheid)

Without trust, you get nowhere. If someone says they will do something, it must really happen. Promising to call and then hearing nothing more? Not exactly a recommendation for your relationship. If your partner's words and actions always match, you know you can trust that person. No contradictory signals, you know where you stand. And that brings peace. No more room for doubts in your head.

Responsiveness – Responsiviteit

When things get shaky in your relationship, it can be tempting to withdraw and avoid confrontation. But that is certainly not a sign of a strong relationship. If your partner is truly responsive, they remain involved, even when tension and vulnerability rise. The other person takes responsibility, listens, and thinks carefully about their response. Together, you tackle the conflict, hopefully recovering together and, cliché but true, coming out stronger.

Predictability – Voorspelbaarheid

By predictability, we don't mean that your partner organizes the same date night every time. What we do mean is that the other generally exhibits the same behavior and reacts in the same way in different situations. For example, you know what to expect in a discussion and don't have to fear sudden outbursts. You can relax and trust in your strong foundation. Even with unexpected changes, you can handle it, no matter how stressful they are.

How do you know if your partner passes the CARRP test?

How can you be sure that your (potential) partner passes the CARRP test? It mainly comes down to listening to your feelings. The most important characteristic of a relationship that ticks all the boxes is that it feels stable, safe, and reliable. You shouldn't constantly doubt where you stand, or analyze every (unprompted) message or disagreement. To pass the test, your partner (or you, of course) must keep commitments, respond thoughtfully to situations, and be genuinely involved in the relationship. There is listening to each other, feelings are allowed, and together you get through conflicts. No constant alertness or danger mode, but truly being able to relax with each other.

Conversely, you can quickly notice if someone does not meet the CARRP test. Then the tension is constant. You are always concerned about whether the other person is keeping their commitments and when the next unpredictable moment will arise. Such a relationship costs an enormous amount of energy, and you feel that.

The CARRP test and the future of your relationship: what you really need to know

In a new relationship, you naturally want to know as soon as possible if you are a good match. But let's be honest: that often takes longer than we would like. Do you want to subject your lover to the CARRP test right after the first date? That makes little sense. It is mainly about patterns, behavior that repeats itself. Keeping a commitment once is nice, but that doesn't say everything. How do things go between you when the initial butterflies have settled? Consistency is key, remember? Give it two to three months; then you will likely have your routine down. If you still don't recognize those CARRP characteristics then, you may wonder if they will ever come. The longer you are together, the clearer those traits should become. If that is the case, the future looks bright. But if that doesn't happen, then it will be a failing grade, and your relationship (unfortunately) has not passed.

So, what does the CARRP test say about your relationship? Whether you are just starting out or have been together for a while, it never hurts to take a good look at the stability and sustainability of what you have together. Are you ready for the long term, or is it time to see things a bit clearer? So, it's time to take that CARRP test because your relationship deserves that check!
