Everything about the conflict between Chappell Roan and Jude Law's daughter

By

When stylist Law Roach casually mentioned that Zendaya and Tom Holland's wedding had already taken place, my jaw dropped to the floor. If you had told my 2019 self this, I would have spontaneously become short of breath. And no one knew anything. No paparazzi, no leaks, no ‘source close to the couple’. Absolutely nothing.

Think back to the last time you saw a paparazzi photo of Adele. Exactly. And do you know which American state Beyoncé lives in? Another mystery. Lady Gaga previously said that she doesn't spend money on houses or piles of cars, but on good security. And we only see her when she wants to.

We want to know everything about celebrities, from their skincare routine to every juicy detail of their love life. The same goes for Chappell Roan, even though she is trying hard to put a stop to it herself. Whether you know her from her songs ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ and ’Casual’ or from that much-discussed dress that was only attached to her nipples: today she is everywhere. After an interaction with Jude Law's 11-year-old daughter that brought the girl to tears.

A dream that ends in security blues

The story goes like this: Ada Law was all set for Chappell Roan's concert, of whom she is a big fan. She even made a sign to stand out from the crowd. Instead of in the concert hall, the eleven-year-old unexpectedly encountered her idol in the breakfast room of a hotel in Brazil. To make sure it was really Roan and not another curly-haired girl, she walked past her table, without saying anything, without asking for a photo or autograph. Afterwards, mother and daughter were confronted by an angry security guard who threatened to report the family to the hotel.

The morning turned from a dream into a major disappointment and Ada decided not to go to the concert anymore. Step-father and footballer Jorgino Frello posted an Instagram story in which he explained what happened. And he emphasizes in this story in capital letters that Chappell Roan would be nothing without her fans. Even the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo da Costa Paes, got involved in the discussion and posted on X that Roan would no longer be welcome to perform in Todo Mundo no Rio.

The singer responded in turn and distanced herself from what happened in the breakfast room: the security guard did not work for her, and she said she hadn't even seen the family. She also denied having anything against fans or children. Quite the opposite: she disapproved of the guard's behavior. However, it didn't stop there: mother Catherine Harding made a video to tell her side of the story. In these seven minutes, she says that the guard, in her opinion, did belong to Chappell and that if she doesn't want to be watched, she should have breakfast in her hotel room.

Paparazzi hear it time and again from Roan

Whether Chappell Roan sent the security guard after mother and daughter or not, one thing is undeniable: she has built a reputation as someone with zero bullshit tolerance. She previously walked out of a restaurant in Paris when she was surrounded by fans and paparazzi. Instead of running into the open car door, she turned the tables: she grabbed her phone and started filming them, while loudly stating that she simply wanted to be left alone.

Also at the MTV Video Music Awards 2024, she made her voice heard. When a paparazzo yelled at her to shut her mouth, she shot back without hesitation with a clear “you shut the fuck up” and a pointing finger. And it didn't stop there: that same year she confronted a photographer during the premiere of Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS World Tour.

Yet her actions seem to have an effect. On the red carpet of the Grammy Awards, Sabrina Carpenter noted that the paparazzi were “so quiet this year”. According to her, Roan “started a movement”. And perhaps even more telling than her words was the look she had: a mix of much surprise and pride.

Where celebrities like Lady Gaga previously threw around cash to avoid pap walks, Chappell just tells photographers straight to their faces what it's about. Whatever you think of it: when Chappell now parades over the red carpets, you hear “thank you” and “please” coming from behind the cameras. Maybe we are witnessing a shift in the industry. Something entirely new.
