Forget Santorini, this undiscovered Greek island is even more beautiful

When I think of vacation, I think of Greece. And when I think of Greece, the bright blue sea and blue domes of Santorini quickly come to mind. Beautiful, absolutely, but also flooded with tourists and selfie sticks. So just imagine: a Greek island that is just as beautiful, but where you can enjoy your book on the beach in peace. Well, it exists. Meet Lefkas, also known as Lefkada in Greek. An undiscovered gem that might even be more beautiful than Santorini and Zakynthos.

Very affordable
Just for your bank account, you would go there. It is significantly cheaper than most Greek islands. In Lefkas, at least you don't have sky-high prices like you do in Mykonos or Santorini for a simple lunch or overnight stay. So treat yourself to a nice hotel, because you certainly won't pay top dollar there.

White bays
Lefkas undoubtedly has the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Porto Katsiki and Egremni Beach are literally beaches like you see on Pinterest: crystal clear water and a coastline surrounded by steep white cliffs with plenty of sunbeds. You can even rent a boat and sail to bays that are only accessible by sea.

Plenty to do
But lying on the beach all day is of course not for everyone. For all water sports enthusiasts, there is certainly plenty to experience. The southern part of the island, especially around Vassiliki, is known as one of the best places in Europe to windsurf and kitesurf. Not in the mood for all that adrenaline? Then you can also take a day trip to the inland, where you will find the Nidri Waterfalls. It's a bit of a trek, but then you have something, because you can swim there.

Charming fishing villages
Moreover, there are plenty of picturesque villages that give you the feeling that you have landed in Mamma Mia. The spot Agios Nikitas is one such example — small streets, white houses with flowers everywhere, and plenty of tavernas where you can order moussaka and gyros. Or drive to Vassiliki, a fishing village known for its laid-back atmosphere and cozy harbor. Perfect for when you like to dine by the water at sunset.

Delicious food
You haven't been to Greece if you haven't eaten pita gyros, moussaka, and a generous amount of creamy feta. Now, of course, there are countless tavernas in Lefkas where this is on the menu, but if I may recommend a restaurant, it would be Rachi Taverna in Exanthia. This restaurant is high in the mountains and has a terrace with a view where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset in the evening. A must-visit, if you ask me.

So... I think I know where your next vacation is going. It's going to be Lefkas, right??
