Love Story episode 8: disappointing in one word

Every Friday a new episode of Love Story, the drama series about the life of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette that keeps everyone captivated. Me foremost.
My daughter, also infected with the Bessette-Kennedy virus, was still struggling with her last exam, so out of sympathy for her, I wanted to wait to watch until she was done. Last night my resolve broke and I gave in. The temptation was just too great.
Now you want to know if my unfaithful viewing behavior was worth it. Well: not at all. I found Love Story episode 8 intensely disappointing. And so did all my fellow fans (who also watched).
What do we actually see?
Well, little. Or a lot of the same, it just depends on how you look at it. Love Story is one of the most expensive series ever made, but I have the feeling that with Love Story episode 8 they tried to trim an expanding budget.
Aside from a running scene through New York, everything takes place in one location: the apartment of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn. Now, recreating this apartment cost a million dollars, so I suspect they spread that investment over an extra episode to justify the budget a bit more.
But as far as viewing pleasure is concerned, this was a big minus.

Love Story: endless arguments in one apartment
All you see are John and Carolyn constantly arguing. About the fact that Carolyn doesn't leave the house and John, according to her, does nothing to adjust his life to hers.
Meanwhile, we do see footage of the death of Lady Diana, which naturally shocks Carolyn because she is also being pursued by the paparazzi. But beyond that, Love Story episode 8 remains stuck in the same setting, the same conversations, and the same tension.
Love Story missed opportunities in the story
What this episode mainly shows is what is NOT being done. The creators could have made a sequence where you see John appearing alone at parties, or cycling alone through New York, or constantly putting the key in the lock alone.
That kind of footage would have made his loneliness and the distance between him and Carolyn much more palpable. Now, Love Story episode 8 remains stuck in dialogue, without visual depth. And that honestly feels a bit lazy and complacent.

Waiting for what’s to come
The feeling that lingers is that the story has actually already been told and that we are now mainly waiting for the next chapter: the episode in which they die. And that’s a shame, because just the buildup to that could have used more tension and layers.
Watch Love Story or skip it?
I’m still a fan and will be ready with my laptop on my lap this Friday, this time together with my daughter, because her exams will be done by then. But Love Story episode 8 you can safely skip as far as I’m concerned.
