MAFS 2026: already scandals, strict casting and no second chances

Update! The date is finally known, as the newest season of MAFS Australia (13) will finally start on February 27 in the Netherlands on Videoland. I.can't.wait.
At the end of 2025 I wrote this:
I am already so looking forward to the new season of MAFS 2026. But however long we have to wait, the launch of Married at First Sight (MAFS) 2026 really is getting closer and closer. The full cast has not yet been officially announced, but some delicious and eye-catching details have already been leaked that are at least already adding nicely to the buzz surrounding the upcoming season. This will no doubt be a strategy of theirs, and quite honestly, I love it. I'm already reading about internal scandals and changes in the casting process. Anyway, let me tell you in advance what I have read.
1. Casting processes and Strict Rules
The makers of MAFS seem to have drastically tightened the casting process after previous awkward situations. For instance, the MAFS recently announced that all participants will have to meet strict screening restrictions. They must not have a criminal background or have been involved in court cases (duh!!!). If there is even a vague hint of a conflict or something in someone's past, the contestant will be removed from the selection. These stricter rules are meant to ensure that the show does not experience scandals like last year's again (Paul punching a hole in the wall, or Jake making a racist comment about people of colour, or the “crazy eyes” comment about Jacqui). Insiders indicate that this also affects the creativity of the production a bit. Producers still want big personalities and explosive storylines, but with less risk of a PR crisis. Get it.

2. The Scandal of Micah Lomu and Ankita Karungalekar
A recent scandal broke the story of one of the participants of MAFS 2026 abruptly interrupted. Cricket presenter Ankita Karungalekar, who was to be married to Micah Lomu, a financial adviser, saw her dream dashed when Micah was removed from the show after an internal inquiry. According to sources, the couple was told that they were ‘no longer needed on set’ despite positioning themselves as one of the show's favourite couples. The reason for the removal is not fully shared, but the incident has reignited already-discussed concerns about the casting procedure.
Ankita, who earned her Masters in Communication from Monash University and was previously runner-up in the Miss India Australia-election, was clearly disappointed. In a cryptic post on Instagram, she shared an image of a sunset with the text, “Was SO close to having everything I wanted.” How pathetic.

3. No Second Chances This Year
Unlike previous seasons, where couples who did not make it were re-matched, executive producer Kate Paul has stated that there will be no ’second chances’ this year. A pity, because I thought the new matches of season 12, in particular, were brilliant. Lauren & Eliot first formed a couple. When this immediately failed during the honeymoon, they returned and were both re-matched. Lauren was then paired with Clint and Eliot with Veronica.
This decision was taken to prevent unintentional drama from undermining the integrity of the show. So this means that if a couple soon fails, they will not get another chance to be paired with someone else.

4. New Format: Creativity vs. Risk
Although the programme sticks to its traditional formula of dramatic, often explosive relationships, it is clear that the producers of 2026 have to strike a balance between creating interesting storylines and avoiding scandals. This has an impact on the kind of contestants selected, with an emphasis on strong personalities, but therefore also safety.

5. Expected Drama and Tensions
Because the production of MAFS So now 2026 is still in the process of selecting contestants, it is highly likely that we will soon see even more drama based on the dynamics between cast members. Online, fans are speculating that the new strict rules, combined with the greater emphasis on a controlled and carefully curated cast, will make for even more exciting television. Still, it remains to be seen how the producers' approach will translate into the actual viewing experience.
I can't wait!!!
