Mel Schilling quits as expert on Married at First Sight (MAFS) Australia

There are few people on TV for whom I feel so incredibly much sympathy as for Mel Schilling. I find her so intensely sweet, beautiful, honest, sincere, and always straightforward in her perfect way. Without crossing a line. But how unfortunate. Because she is now stepping down as an expert on Married at First Sight (MAFS) Australia and honestly? My absolute biggest guilty pleasure: MAFS Australia is really number 1. The people, the landscape, the nature, the drama, and delicious quality scenes. So Mel, this really feels a bit like the commitment ceremony couch is suddenly incomplete. Because today, on February 17, 2026, she announced that she is saying goodbye to the Australian version of the show after twelve seasons.

Why Mel Schilling is stepping down as an expert on Married at First Sight (MAFS) Australia
Mel Schilling is now 54 years old and has spent the last five years splitting her life between Australia and the United Kingdom. Because Mel is also an expert on the English MAFS. Which automatically means that MAFS UK is my number two guilty pleasure. But that meant for Mel: months of filming in Australia, while her home is now in the UK, together with her husband Gareth and daughter Maddie (10).
Three months a year away from your family sounds wonderful, heading to the Australian sun and dramatic dinners, but Mel's situation is quite different. In December 2023, Mel was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Since January 2025, she has fortunately been in remission, but two years of chemotherapy, surgeries, and treatments while filming two seasons a year took a toll on her.
On Instagram she wrote: “This hasn’t been a choice I’ve made lightly.” And we believe that immediately.
Mel Schilling is stepping down as an expert on Married at First Sight (MAFS) Australia due to her health
But health puts everything into perspective. Mel herself indicated that her recent health challenges made her realize that family, time, and well-being must be central. And rightly so. Is this the best advice to herself? I think so.
She is leaving MAFS Australia “not with sadness, but with deep gratitude.” So no fights, no drama, no juicy backstage stories. Just a woman choosing her health and family.

What does Mel Schilling's departure mean for Married at First Sight (MAFS) Australia?
Since season two (2016), Mel has been a regular expert on Married at First Sight Australia. She has guided more than a hundred couples during their love experiment. She was there, on the couch during those delicious infamous commitment ceremonies.
No replacement has been announced yet. I am therefore also curious who can replace her, her authenticity, and passion. Because she is such an important part of the success. She was not only an expert but also truly the heart of the program.
Will Mel Schilling remain connected to Married at First Sight (MAFS) UK?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Fortunately. And that might be the good news in this whole story. Mel will remain connected to Married at First Sight UK, where she has also been on the experts' couch since 2021. For Mel, that means more stability and especially: living in the country where her family is.
So she is not opting for a total exit from television land, but one where she also lives.

From dating coach to global phenomenon
MAFS started out as a “small social experiment,” but grew into a global phenomenon. Mel, together with John Aiken, was at the cradle of that growth. With more than twenty years of experience in both the business and therapeutic world, Mel guided people from boardroom to bridal bouquet.
On a personal level, she had been single for ten years in Melbourne, became an online dating pro, met her partner around her fortieth, went through IVF, and became a mother at 42. In 2019, she married Gareth in Bali. Her story is therefore not only professionally substantiated but also lived.
What now for MAFS without Mel Schilling?
The experiment will continue, that is certain. But it will be different without Mel. The tone may change a bit. Less of her lovely calm Australian down-to-earthness, empathy, and sharp analysis.
