New on Netflix in February

By

It may be the shortest month of the year, but that doesn't stop Netflix. They are giving us another packed list of new titles that we can add to our watchlist. Probably the only situation where binge-watching actually pays off. I’ll go through the best movies and series with you, so you can comfortably settle in for a movie night. And yes, that can include a glass of wine, dry January is over, right?

Bring Her Back (February 3 on Netflix)

February may be the month of Valentine's Day, but at Netflix, rose petals and romantic candles are hard to find. The horror film ‘Bring Her Back’ sets a dark tone. After the death of their father, Andy (Billy Barratt) and his stepsister Piper (Sora Wong) end up in a foster home. Their new guardian Laura (Sally Hawkins) seems very sweet at first, but dark secrets lurk behind her smile. The brother and sister witness a gruesome ritual and soon realize: we are trapped here. They must do everything they can to escape Laura's grasp. If we are to believe the reactions, this film is not for the faint-hearted among us. So you have been warned. But hey, huddling close together out of fright is also a bit romantic, right?

Unfamiliar season 1 (February 5 on Netflix)

Time for a trip to our eastern neighbors, but not for a quiet sightseeing adventure. We are going for the latest action thriller ‘Unfamiliar’. In the heart of Berlin, ex-spies Simon (Felix Kramer) and Meret (Susanne Wolff) are hiding in their safehouse “The Nest”. Everything seems under control until an old threat unexpectedly resurfaces; one they thought they had finally left behind. Hitmen, Russian agents, the Federal Intelligence Service, and ex-lovers: danger suddenly comes from all sides. And oh yes, the two ex-spies are also married. With so much threat, that marriage is under significant strain. The truth must come to light before everything collapses.

Something’s Gotta Give (February 6 on Netflix)

What makes movies so great is that they always exist. Even when a celeb is sadly no longer with us, we can still enjoy their talent. After the passing of Diane Keaton last October, a rewatch of her best titles was a must. And of course, ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ is at the top of that list. Fortunately, Netflix understands that too, and this month the classic is finally returning. Just to be sure, a little recap: billionaire Harry Langer (Jack Nicholson) primarily focuses on younger women in love. With his latest girlfriend, he takes a trip to her luxurious family home in the Hamptons, but things go wrong there. Harry has a heart attack and is forced to be taken care of by his mother-in-law Erica (Diane Keaton). It soon turns out that is no punishment at all, and his feelings grow. But yes, there are more suitors on the horizon.

ER (February 10 on Netflix)

When you think of a medical drama series, you probably think of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. But before this show won our hearts (hello, McDreamy), there was another title that was the biggest in this genre: ‘ER’. In this series, we follow the doctors of County General Hospital in Chicago, where just as many bizarre operations, dramas, and romances take place as we are used to from ‘Grey’s’. And the cast? It's not bad either. The careers of George Clooney, Julianna Margulies, and Noah Wyle got a big boost here, and the guest roles are impressive too. Zac Efron, Shia LaBeouf, and Chadwick Boseman, to name just a few. Netflix gives us all 15 seasons right away, so we can binge for a while. And don't worry, that’s allowed even after February.

La celda de los milagros (February 13 on Netflix)

Do you have any tissues at home? You will definitely need them for ‘La celda de los milagros’. This South American film is a remake of the Korean hit ‘Miracle in Cell No.7’, and anyone who knows that film knows that there will be some tears. The story revolves around Héctor (Omar Chaparro), a father with a neurological condition who does everything for his daughter Alma (Mariana Calderón). But when Héctor is wrongfully accused of a crime and arrested, the two are torn apart. Even in prison, Alma remains his priority. The father does everything he can to prove his innocence; he must be released for his daughter.

The Night Agent season 3 (February 19 on Netflix)

Netflix sometimes has a knack for making us wait a long time for new seasons. But sometimes we are lucky: less than a year after the last episodes, ‘The Night Agent’ is back with season 3. And if we are to believe the creators, it’s going to be even more dangerous than we are used to. After the explosive ending of season 2, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) must search for a fugitive agent from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He has left with sensitive government information to Istanbul. Peter finds himself in an international network full of black money and corruption and must stay out of the hands of hitmen. The question is who he can trust, although help seems to come from an unexpected corner.

Cortafuego (February 20 on Netflix)

Move over, DuoLingo, there’s a new title that will refresh our Spanish skills. Although I wonder how much language learning will actually come into play, as the thrilling storyline will likely take center stage. In the new thriller ‘Cortafuego’ (Firebreak), we follow Mara (Belén Cuesta). After the death of her husband, she goes with her daughter, brother, sister-in-law, and nephew to their summer house in the woods. The house must be sold, a way to close their mourning. But everything turns into a nightmare when Mara’s daughter disappears, especially during a major forest fire. Without wasting time, the family does everything they can to find the girl. The ranger seems to be able to help them, until he becomes the main suspect.
