About 80% of women (and 40% of men) have stretch marks. And no, this has nothing to do with torn skin, as is sometimes said. It is the subcutaneous connective tissue that tears, resulting in a scar. This happens when your skin cannot keep up with the (rapid) growth, for example during pregnancy, a growth spurt in puberty, rapid weight gain, or intense sports and training. Therefore, you often see stretch marks around your hips, buttocks, belly, legs, breasts, and arms.

It is so nice that stretch marks are increasingly visible in (fashion) campaigns with models, that they are no longer edited, but there are still many women who feel uncomfortable about it. They slather themselves with all sorts of products to make the stretch marks less visible or even to get rid of them. Unfortunately, completely removing stretch marks is not entirely possible. Dark scars do become less visible over time; this is a slow process, but it really happens.

The right products for stretch marks

Where one person fully accepts their stretch marks, the other prefers to get rid of them. For years, Bio-Oil was the product against stretch marks, but it is not necessarily the best choice. Oil remains important, but there are now other products that can actually help effectively. Dermatologist Dr. Adel, who has 1.7 million followers on TikTok, recommends three products that can actually help reduce your stretch marks. These products are probably new to you, but they do a great job.

1. Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid gives your skin a hydration boost every day. It attracts moisture and ensures that your skin remains supple, which supports the healing process of stretch marks. Applying it to damp skin ensures better absorption. This is a must for repairing the skin and softening stretch marks.

2. Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Cica is a plant known for its restorative properties. It promotes collagen production, which helps the skin to heal faster and makes stretch marks less visible. Use this in combination with hyaluronic acid for a real power duo, as it helps to calm and repair the skin after damage. Cica is a good product for wounds and the formation of scars, wherever they are on your body.

3. Tretinoin

Tretinoin, also known as vitamin A acid, is a powerful ingredient that accelerates skin cell renewal. You do not use this every day, but about two to three times a week. Also, check first if your skin can handle it, so start with a thin layer. It helps renew the top layer of skin, making stretch marks less noticeable. Just don't use this during the day in the summer, as it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. So, make sure to apply a high SPF after use to prevent sun damage. My tip? Use it in the evening, just as easy.

Stretch marks: it’s part of it

These three products hydrate, care for, and help repair your skin, but stretch marks will never completely disappear. They are part of your skin, and that is really okay. Especially with the bikini season approaching, there is no reason to hide them. Own it and be proud of it, really.
