These are the ten most romantic Netflix movies for your Valentine's Day

Just a little reminder: tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Are you freaking out because you promised to plan the date? Don't panic, for a cozy evening with your lover one solution is always within reach: Netflix. This time no grim true crime docu, but time for romance. We collected the ten most romantic films for your perfect Valentine's Day. Will you still take care of the candles?
Set It Up
Perhaps the number one answer to the question “what do you look for in a partner?” is humour. Therefore, of course, a good romcom cannot be missing from this list. If we may recommend one: ‘Set It Up’. Nice and light-hearted, playful and with the perfect chemistry between the actors.
The story revolves around Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell). Both work for rather demanding bosses. During their umpteenth task of fetching food, the two meet and click. Constantly running the legs out from under your body for your boss creates a bond after all, and leads to ideas. What if they linked their bosses? Then they would probably spend less time in the office, right? Time for action, though the plan soon takes a slightly different turn. You may already feel it coming, but hey, isn't that exactly what makes romcoms so delightful?
To All the Boys I've Loved Before
Tell the truth: have you ever had a crush you hoped no one would ever find out about? Not to worry, your secret is safe. With Lara Jean (Lana Condor) in ‘To All the Boys I've Loved Before’, this is slightly less the case. To all the boys she was ever in love with, she wrote a letter. Not to send, but to put safely away.
Until that sacred box suddenly goes missing and the letters mysteriously end up in the boys' mailboxes. What follows is a rather complicated situation resolved in the best way possible: a fake relationship with Peter (Noah Centineo), one of the letter recipients. In a film as mole-sweet as this one, you can't avoid the clichés, but again, you won't hear us complaining. And the best news? There are two more sequel films on Netflix. Happy Valentine!
Love at First Sight
At the airport, you often have a lot of time to kill. And well, what do you do then? Maybe fantasise about a romance with the handsome stranger walking by. Or do such things only happen in films? In any case, it does in the romcom ‘Love at First Sight’.
When Hadley (Haley Lu Richardson) misses her flight from New York to London, it seems like a disaster at first. Until she meets the charming British Oliver (Ben Hardy). They spend the whole trip together. There is a spark, this feels different. But then, in the hustle and bustle of Heathrow, the two lose sight of each other. According to the film, the chances of them ever seeing each other again are only 0.2 per cent. Impossible, then, you might think....
A nice extra: Jameela Jamil (The Good Place) takes you through the story as narrator, and that makes this film just a little bit different than usual.
Purple Hearts
As one of the most viewed films on Netflix ever, the romantic drama film ‘Purple Hearts’ has definitely earned a spot on your Valentine's Day. Trust us: this is swoon to the max. Cassie (Sofia Carson) currently works as a waitress, but actually dreams of a career in music. Before she can fulfil that dream, she desperately needs her money to pay for her diabetes medication, and that is becoming increasingly difficult.
Until an unexpected solution arises. When soldier Luke (Nicholas Galitzine) enters the bar where Cassie works, she catches some interesting information: marrying a soldier means good health insurance. With slight reluctance, Luke and Cassie strike a deal. It doesn't seem like a real match, but the longer their fake marriage lasts, the more the two thaw out. And when Luke is dispatched, the stakes are suddenly very high after all. The film is already delicious, and the soundtrack can go straight into your collective playlist.
Bridget Jones's Diary
It won't be the first time that choosing a film has led to arguments, even with a shortlist. Since you obviously can't use that on Valentine's Day, here's a tip: you're always right with a classic. And we can call it ‘Bridget Jones's Diary’.
Just to be on the safe side, here's a recap. 32-year-old Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) does not exactly have her life on track. She smokes and drinks too much and her love life isn't really working out either. Time for a change, and good intentions are the perfect start. Bridget changes tack: she wants to lose weight and look for a stable relationship.
To get some grip on her life, she buys a diary to keep track of all her experiences. So far, so good. Until her rather handsome boss Daniel (Hugh Grant) suddenly takes an interest. Will her resolutions hold up?
Lady Chatterley's Lover
For some stories, one film is apparently not enough, so too for ‘Lady Chatterley's Lover’. In this latest release from 2022, Netflix especially sought the sexy edge. Lady Constance Chatterley (Emma Corrin) is married to wealthy aristocrat Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett), but this marriage is anything but happy.
Yet to feel something of love again, she begins an affair with gamekeeper Oliver Mellors (Jack O'Connell). Their romance becomes increasingly ardent, but also leaves Constance in doubt: is she really in love, or is it her physical desires? And what are the consequences of answering that question? Would she dare break with traditions? A costume drama and romance rolled into one. The perfect combination, right?
The Last Letter From Your Lover
Where we now have to make do with an app, love letters used to be sent. How romantic is that? If you want to give your lover a subtle hint, ‘The Last Letter From Your Lover’ is your film.
In it, we follow journalist Ellie (Felicity Jones). As she bites into an investigation, she stumbles upon a letter from 1965. Not one, but a whole pile, all part of the affair between jetsetter Jennifer Stirling (Shailene Woodley) and journalist Anthony O'Hare (Callum Turner). For Jennifer, this ardent desire is an escape from her falling apart marriage to businessman Laurence (Joe Alwyn).
The more Ellie reads, the less she can let go of the story. How did these lovers end up, did their story get a happy ending? And how does this discovery affect Ellie's own life?
Pride & Prejudice
Back to a classic, always good, remember? Fair is fair: ‘Pride & Prejudice’ simply cannot be missing from this list.
For the mother of the five Bennet sisters, only one thing matters: her daughters must find a good husband. When the rich Mr Bingley (Simon Woods) moves into the neighbourhood, she cannot believe her luck, especially when he also turns out to have richer friends. Oldest sisters Jane (Rosamund Pike) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) especially pique the men's interest.
But while the circumstances seem perfect, love is not so easy. Especially not when pride and prejudice come into play. A new remake of the story is even in the works, but for this year, you will succeed with your date anyway with this classic version.
Five Feet Apart
For this film, we give a little warning in advance: besides chocolate, you may also gift your lover some tissues. This one is mega romantic, but we can't promise you'll keep it dry. Sneaking a tear together is cute too, right?
Stella (Haley Lu Richardson) and Will (Cole Sprouse) both have cystic fibrosis, which means they now spend their time in hospital. To avoid problems, the two have to constantly stay 1.80 metres away from each other: five feet apart, always. But as their bond grows stronger, that distance begins to feel greater and greater. Breaking that sacred rule then becomes quite appealing. But will their health allow it?
The Notebook
We end this list with surely the ultimate romantic film: ‘The Notebook’. Chances are you have already seen it, but a rewatch here is definitely not a punishment. Briefly:
When Allison ‘Allie’ Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) is holidaying in the small town of Seabrook in the early 1940s, she meets the charming Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling). He falls for her like a log, yet the two seem quite different; and that seems to get in the way of their love. Still, it becomes a fiery summer full of romance, but that suddenly comes to an end when Allie moves out and Noah joins the army. Their love seems over for good. Only years later do the two find each other again, but will it be in time?
Whichever one you choose, this list will score you points anyway. Just be sure to arrange some snacks and a romantic setting. Enjoy, lovers!
