Now that we are surrounded by gray clouds and a temperature that makes you pull out the long sleeve, I am already dreaming about summer again. This is not only due to the rain, but also because of my new favorite movie: The Last Sunrise. Oh, how I would love to pack my bags and escape to Mallorca and Menorca to escape the cold. Because yes: that’s where the movie was filmed. Curious about where they filmed to set up your escape plan to the sun? Then listen closely.

The Spanish version of Romeo and Juliet don’t film in a studio with a greenscreen. A summer love needs a real warm climate – and so this film was not shot in a studio in Los Angeles, but in Mallorca. The cast and crew stayed for two months at this tropical location and we understand why. Mallorca is more than just an island where you can lie in the sun.

Meanwhile, we know that you can eat wonderfully here and visit the most beautiful places that have nothing to do with the beach. There are plenty of trendy cities like Palma, where you can find all sorts of hotspots to shop, eat, and stroll. Our editor Lotte already wrote earlier that Santa Catalina resembles the Jordaan. And it’s not just our own people who enjoy Mallorca, genough celebs like Dua Lipa, Jennifer Aniston, and Hailey Bieber have been spotted here before. But enough about the island in general. You specifically wanted to know which spots from the movie you can visit. So we’ve looked those up for you:

La Fortaleza

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know we start with a place you will see again: the Sa Fortalesa fortress. This seventeenth-century mansion is one of the largest and most expensive estates in all of Spain. Although it was initially a fortress to defend the bay of Pollença against various enemies, it later came into the possession of the Argentine painter Roberto Ramauge. After a tumultuous history as a military base during the Spanish Civil War, it was eventually sold in 1989. The new owners have transformed it into a great location that honors its history but also has a lot of fun perks, like two swimming pools. In the film, the old fort is seen as the luxury hotel where the story of Pera and Julian unfolds.

Deià

This coastal town, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was part of the exploration that Ry made through Mallorca. I understand why they chose to film here, as this is the textbook example of the Spanish atmosphere the filmmakers wanted to convey. Deià is located in a valley at the foot of the Teix mountain. With all those pink-colored houses, surrounded by palm trees and other greenery, the village is a magnet for all sorts of creatives. Think of artists and writers who finally give their life’s work a chance here.

But, you’re looking for fun things to do that you can add to your escape plan. I personally would love to lie by the bay of Deià. This is a rugged beach where you don’t lie on a golden sandy beach, but in a super beautiful bay that could be featured in National Geographic.

Besides that beach, there are of course plenty of other places to check out. Deià is a real hotspot that hasn’t been overrun by tourists yet. You can hike to the San Juan Bautista church and pick up the cutest ceramic souvenirs in local shops. When you walk through these streets, it feels like you’ve stepped back into history. Just look at these photos; I would love to get lost here.

And as if that wasn’t fantastic enough, the local Hotel Belmond La Residencia steadily ranks every year in the list of ‘best hotels in the world’. You definitely want to go there? To such a Mallorcan paradise with a spa and a restaurant that makes you forget that it’s only 15 degrees in the Netherlands.

Valldemossa

Another village that was made unsafe by the main characters is Valldemossa. However, this one is not located in a valley, but in the middle of the mountains. The Tramuntana mountain range, to be precise. You only need to make the journey to this place once to feel that this truly breathes history. Not only because of the famous Charterhouse that has been here since the fourteenth century, but also because of the entire mountain village. Everyone wants to see ‘the most beautiful village in Mallorca’.

Just by seeing these stone houses, I want to book a plane ticket. The combination of natural stone walls, wooden doors, green shutters for the windows, and lots of flowers makes this a sight you will never forget. It feels a bit like you’ve stepped into Tangled .

As the first viewpoint, you can visit Sa Miranda des Lledoners. You’ll find this at the end of the narrow street Carrer de Jovellanos. This is again one of those spots that doesn’t seem special at first glance, but will definitely steal your attention. Carrer Rectoria, Carrer de la Rosa, and Carreró de la Amargura are also streets that you should absolutely add to your Google Maps list. These streets are real must-see locations. And if you’re there, you must (yes, really must) try coca de patata. This is a bun made from potato, sugar, and egg. It may sound a bit strange, but it’s said to be really delicious. The very best, according to experience experts is at Panadería Pastelería Ca’n Molinas. Are you more into tapas? Then you can definitely eat those here at S’estret and Sa Cova.

The Cala Marcella beach

And finally, there’s a rather famous location where a lot of scenes were filmed: the Cala Marcella beach. This beautiful bay with white sand, turquoise water, and cliffs that even the biggest scaredy-cat would want to jump off, is one of the best beaches in the whole world. This year, it was ranked number 12 out of 50. If that’s not good enough for your last-minute summer trip, then I don’t know what is.

And now in September, you can at least be almost certain that you won’t be swimming among hundreds of tourists.
