Thanksgiving for dummies

I’ve cursed Thanksgiving in the past. Just try getting in touch with anyone in America. Like trying to contact a celebrity’s agent for approval for a cover for instance. You can’t. Nor the day after. America is closed for business on this day, even more so than for Christmas. What do they do and why do they do it you want to know? Nice that you asked. I’m going to fill you in.

  • Thanksgiving is the most important holiday of the year in the USA. Thanks are given for the harvest and for many other good things. Do your friends in Canada celebrate it earlier? Correct. It’s the second Monday in October over there, but the fourth Thursday in November in America. Why is that? Because the harvest is finished earlier in Canada. Logical.
  • The menu stays pretty much the same. Stuffed turkey on the left, potato mash on the right, sometimes sweet potatoes, and something with cranberries. A pecan pie or a pumpkin pie are often eaten. Many celebrities Instagram photos of their stuffed turkeys and they actually seem to eat them too.

  • No other activities on this day, no church or anything. They watch American Football before the meal. Yes, yes, we’re we’re talking the United States here.

  • America stays closed the day after Thanksgiving too. No-one works. Except for shopkeepers because everyone goes shopping the day after. Christmas presents. The next holiday that all Americans go offline for. Then back to work, for the rest of the year.

  • The Friday after the Thursday is known as Black Friday. Because the streets are black with so many people (happy days) and because shopkeepers are in the black numbers because loads of money is spent.
  • Not everyone likes spending it with family. Some people give friends-giving parties, so that a group of friends can get together, eat turkey and watch American Football.
