how to drink less

“I haven’t had a single drink yet ” is something that’s said daily here at the office. Sometimes even at two in the afternoon. I don’t know if there is a scientific explanation for the amount of alcohol intake when the temperatures are up, but after my own little bit of field research it seems that a hankering for an adult beverage is higher in the summer.

A glass or two of rosé during lunch and at five o’clock you are pretty much hooked up to a Chardonnay IV. Some people are really proud when they’ve ‘only’ had one bottle when actually that is already too much. Not good for the head, not good for the body.

Hence the reason I bent over backwards thinking of ways to drink less without it becoming boring.

postpone the first drinking moment

There is only one thing better than having your first glass of wine during lunch and that is: having a glass of champagne before lunch. But try to say no. And if you find that to be too difficult then try a little left to right head shake. Once you’re in a drinking mode, you want to continue. As is with everything that isn’t good for you.

Serve a nice alternative

A Crodino also give you that pampering feeling. Fun little bottle, bitter bite. It’s like Martini but without the alcohol. If you want to be a little festive, you can also use it to make alcohol free cocktails.

smaller glasses

This really works. When you’re drinking out of a smaller glass, you take smaller sips leading to quicker refills giving you that ‘oh I am replenishing rather quickly’ –feeling when in reality it’s not all that bad.

Drink something else on the side

I’m a terrible water drinker in the evening but I do enjoy a cup of tea. So next to my glass of wine I’ll have some tea making me switch from one to the other. A friend of mine has a rule that with every glass of wine she needs to drink at least two glasses of water. You drink less, and you avoid a hangover.

have coffee or tea after dinner

As soon as I’m in my snug drinking mode, this is my recipe. Break your cycle with an espresso for example and you’ll be refreshed.

Go swimming

Spending a summery day lounging by the pool with a Daiquiri and a good book, then a good tip to sober up is to take a quick dive in the pool. You’ll be rejuvenated and in the mood for a ton of healthy things.
