Amayzine’s been keeping very busy, all in the name of world domination, and so last Saturday I boarded a plane to London, while some of my other co-editors were beating off their New York jetlag. MAC Cosmetics invited me to nose around backstage at a couple of shows during London Fashion Week and to interview Charlotte Olympia and Ellie Goulding about their newest collaboration with this fabulous makeup brand. Let’s just say, my agenda was packed (with fun things) and I’m here to share my flash trip across the pond with you.
Saturday I headed on over to the airport at 7AM, which meant my alarm clock went off at an ungodly hour, to board my plane to head towards the Big Ben. As you know, the company you’re with on these kinds of trips can really make or break the atmosphere, but as soon as I spotted my travel buddies from the coolest PR agencies in the Netherlands (U-PR and the MAC Cosmetics PR company), I knew this trip was bound to be great. Think of us as the new incarnation of the Spice Girls.
Anyways, after having lunch and dropping off our suitcases at our hotel, we allowed ourselves to be devoured in the world of Louis Vuitton. You might have read about it here yesterday but I repeat; if you’re headed to London you NEED to visit this place.
After Louis, I met up with super rad Ellie Goulding. She recently finished designing a cool makeup collection together with MAC Cosmetics and I was there to ask her anything and everything about it. Now I have to be honest and tell you that I had her music on repeat last week to prepare myself for this (and to learn all of her lyrics by heart). Luckily I was able to tame my nerves to avoid coming off as a groupie, and so the interview went by wonderfully. We even had a couple of laughs every now and then so I mean, I hardly have to explain that Ellie is now my new BFF. Hence the reason we went out for dinner in the evening. Minor detail, our party consisted of about 20 press people, and as humble as Ellie is, she preferred no one take any pictures. So the dozens of selfies Ellie and I took together I’ll just keep to myself, sorry guys!
During the intimate dinner we were all handed a ticket to her concert which would be taking place in the evening and so we spent the rest of the night singing and dancing along to Ellie’s entire repertoire. As humble and quiet as she was during her interviews, Ellie turned into a sexy stage animal oozing out energy while she was performing. And I just sang along shamelessly. After the concert I headed straight to bed and rightfully so cause the following day my alarm clock was set to wake me up at 6AM.
At 7:30 you could find me backstage at Preen’s show, but not before I filled my iPhone with the most picturesque pictures of the London Bridge with the most beautiful sunrise. The location for the Preen show was impeccable since it had the best view of the entire city. I’ll update you guys about life backstage next week, but let’s just say that I’ve got a bunch of fun Intel from Dutch model Julia van Os, one of the many beauties who strutted on the Preen runway.
After nosing around backstage, I quickly grabbed some breakfast before heading over to my interview with Charlotte Olympia about her collaboration with MAC Cosmetics. Because apart from her insane talent for shoe design, this girl knows a thing or two about makeup too. I opted to wear sneakers though cause heels and I don’t really go hand in hand, and I might have felt a tad bit underdressed next to Charlotte, but hey, I now learnt from the queen of heels that I should always carry around a shade of red to spruce up my lips after a night out, it works wonders for the face. Thank you Charlotte.
After my interview with Charlotte I headed straight for a cab to go to the Paul Smith show where I would also be allowed to nose around backstage. And it was fun. So much fun cause none other than mister Smith himself gave me a tour of the hair and makeup, the runway and the collection. And after the tour it was straight onto my final visit of the day; backstage at Mary Katrantzou where I immediately bumped into Dutch delight Maartje Verhoef. More on that next week too.
After the show we decided to end the day at Sketch for dinner. Just so you know, Sketch is the coolest restaurant I have ever been to. The walls are covered in illustrations, their napkins have cute little notes on them, their cutlery and tableware have insane drawings, and they have a mouth watering menu. And then I haven’t even mentioned the bathrooms yet. I can’t even explain it. Reason enough to visit London.
But the Louis Vuitton exhibition, the MAC Cosmetics collaborations, Charlotte Olympia and Ellie Goulding and dinner at sketch were all reasons enough for me to plan a trip to London again soon. It was a blast and now I’m homebound with a suitcase full of inspiration.
Amayzine is natuurlijk hartstikke bezig met world domination en dus stapte ik zaterdag in het vliegtuig naar Londen, terwijl Jet, May-Britt en Liesbeth bezig waren de New Yorkse jetlag van zich af te schudden. Namens M.A.C Cosmetics mocht ik bij een paar shows backstage gluren en Charlotte Olympia en Ellie Goulding interviewen over hun samenwerking met dit allermooiste make-upmerk. Een vol program dus. Ik neem je mee.
Zaterdag wandelde ik 7 uur ’s ochtends Schiphol binnen (reken dus maar éven uit hoe laat ik ben opgestaan) om het vliegtuig in te stappen. Nu is gezelschap waar je drie dagen mee samen bent reuze belangrijk, maar toen ik Sigrid van Metro, Kim van Prestage Magazine en Bente van U-PR (het PR-bureau van M.A.C Cosmetics) op het vliegveld zag, wist ik dat dat helemaal goed zou zijn. Als vier Spice Girls zouden wij de stad veroveren.
Na een lunch en de koffer drop-off in het hotel heb ik mezelf eerst laten onderdompelen in de wereld van Louis Vuitton. Heb je natuurlijk gister al gelezen, dus daar weet je alles van, maar ik zeg het nog één keer; ben je in Londen, bezoek het!
Vervolgens was het in één zuchtje door naar Ellie Goulding. Zij heeft een waanzinnig coole collectie ontworpen samen met M.A.C Cosmetics en ik mocht haar daar álles over vragen. Nu moet ik je wel vertellen dat we op de redactie vorige week vrijwel de hele week haar muziek hebben gedraaid om een beetje in de sferen te komen (oké, en om wat nummers uit m’n hoofd te leren), dus ik zat inmiddels wel aardig in de sfeer. Ik heb m’n zenuwen een beetje moeten onderdrukken, want ik wilde niet als groupie overkomen. Dat interview is dus best heel goed gegaan. Er werd ook best gelachen tijdens het interview en je begrijpt dat we direct best friends forever waren. Vandaar dat we ’s avonds nog een hapje zijn gaan eten samen. Minor detail is dat er nog zo’n 20 andere persmensjes aanwezig waren en bescheiden als Ellie is, wilde ze liever niet dat er foto’s genomen werden. Die honderd selfies samen met Ellie moet ik dus even voor mezelf houden. Sorry.
Tijdens het intieme diner kregen we allemaal een concertkaartje op ons bord en dat betekende dat we ’s avonds mee mochten swingen en zingen op haar repertoire. Oké, misschien kwamen er toen wel wát groupiegeluiden uit, want ik was dus meer dan enthousiast. Samen met Sigrid en Diederik van M.A.C Cosmeticsrolden we de Londense taxi in en schoven we vervolgens zachtjes op een stoeltje in de concerthal om het meest coole concert ooit mee te maken. Waar Ellie ’s middags nog een poezelig poppetje was, werd ze on stage echt een sexy podiumbeest vol energie. En ik heb schaamteloos meegezongen, alles vastgelegd op film en m’n handen rood geklapt van trotsheid op alles. Na het concert vielen mijn ogen bijna dicht van vermoeidheid, dus na een afscheidscocktail ben ik linea recta mijn bed ingerold.
Thank God dat ik meteen mijn bed had opgezocht om 01.00 uur, want vijf uurtjes later ging de wekker weer. Om 7.30 uur stond ik backstage bij de show van Preen, maar niet voordat ik m’n telefoon had volgeschoten met ansichtkaartplaatjes van de London Bridge die perfect voor het zonnetje stond. Preen was dus op een heel goede plek waar je uitzicht had over de hele stad. Het backstage verslag komt volgende week dus daar ga ik nu niet te veel over uitweiden, maar dat Julia van Os mij haar backstagegeheimen toefluisterde en ik de rehearsal van begin tot einde heb meegemaakt geeft wel aan dat het het vroege opstaan behoorlijk waard was. Na het backstage bezoekje bij Preen deden we even een vlug ontbijtje in het hotel om vervolgens Charlotte Olympia te interviewen over haar samenwerking met M.A.C. Want ja, de schoenenkoningin heeft haar creatieve talenten ook even op make-up uitgeoefend. Nu heb ik sinds vorig jaar de hakken afgezworen en ging ik Charlotte op m’n sneakertjes interviewen, maar daar is heus niet een minder interview uitgekomen hoor. Al voelde ik me íetwat underdressed en heb ik nu als motto dat ik voor altijd een rode lippenstift in m’n tas ga stoppen. Zij zag natuurlijk ook mijn kleine oogjes en fluisterde mij het geheim toe dat rode lippenstift je altijd een boost zal geven. Dank, Charlotte.
Na het interview met Charlotte Olympia hopsa weer de taxi in op weg naar de show van Paul Smith waar ik ook backstage mocht gluren. En dat was leuk, heel leuk, want meneer Smith himself gaf mij een rondleiding langs de hair & make-up maar ook een tourtje catwalk én hij gaf me een glimp van de collectie. Na die tour méteen weer door naar het laatste bezoekje backstage bij Mary Katrantzou, waar ik meteen al Maartje Verhoef tegen het rankje lijfje liep. Maakte de show nog nét even bijzonderder. Maar ook daar ga ik je volgende week een uitgebreid verslag van geven.
Na de Fashion Week-rush van vandaag sloten we de dag af met een diner bij Sketch. Je moet weten, Sketch is het állercoolste restaurant waar ik ooit heb gegeten. Het heeft nog nét niet mijn naam, zo leuk vind ik het. Illustraties aan de muur, servetjes waar op gekrabbeld is, servies met de mooiste tekeningen en een menukaart waarvan je álles wilt hebben. Vergeet ik bijna de wc’s. Is niet uit te leggen, daarvoor móet je echt even naar Londen.
Maar samen met de tentoonstelling van Louis Vuitton, de komst van de samenwerkingen tussen M.A.C Cosmetics, Charlotte Olympia én Ellie Goulding en dus dat bezoekje aan Sketch zijn er volgens mij genoeg redenen om een ticket te boeken. Ik zeg; tot gauw Londen en dank, M.A.C. Het was veel te leuk en ik ben met m’n Louis Vuitton-koffertje vol inspiratie naar huis gereisd.
