From summer wardrobe to winter wardrobe
The advantage of a new season is that you are completely legitimized to buy new things. For example, I've been saying for weeks that I can definitely look for quite expensive wool and cashmere sweaters “because hello, do you know how cold it is?!” The downside of a new season is that you have to leave all your favorite outfits from the previous season hanging in the closet for months. This summer, I completely discovered short jumpsuits. Especially in New York it turned out to be a golden find because you just put on such an outfit, add a pair of high heels, a good bag on your arm and voilà, you're ready to go. But, do you really have to say goodbye? Oh no, there are all sorts of ways to transform your summer wardrobe into a winter wardrobe.
Tights are your best friends
The first thing you need to do is buy good tights in different deniers, ranging from 20 to 100 and everything in between. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of colored tights, but if that's totally your thing, go get them. I now wear my outfits with a 30 denier tight and my Isabel Marant boots and suddenly it’s a prrrrrima winter look. That 100 denier tight will become your support and comfort when it’s really cold because such a thick tight is much warmer than a pair of jeans. I swear by short skirts, high boots (or other cool booties), thick tights and then a nice big sweater – and yes, that is really much, much warmer than any regular pants.
Wear everything at once
Figuratively speaking, but building your outfit in layers is always a good idea, so all those thin summer layers together are suddenly very warm again. So both that cute sweater with lace at the neckline, and your thin light blue blouse, and a breezy summer jacket, and that scarf, just throw everything together. Leandra Medine from The Man Repeller is the queen of layering, if you’re in need of inspiration.
Buy a sleeveless vest
Such a large wool vest without sleeves is perfect for wearing your leather jacket comfortably throughout the winter. I can't manage without my perfect leather jacket and thanks to the sheep that I always wear with it (this one from Zara) it’s also perfectly wearable with the dropping temperatures.
Look at the home department with different eyes…
I have a number of large scarves and people always ask where I got them because they have the perfect size. The secret is that they are not scarves at all, but blankets from H&M or Ikea. Seriously. Those things are so wonderfully large and you can completely disappear in them, and whoever drapes them a bit creatively over the shoulders has a kind of poncho/cape/scarf all in one for a few tens. Ideal for making thin summer jackets just warm enough for the early winter months.
