Winter ready in 5 steps

The scent is already in the air. This morning on the bike, my trench coat actually felt too cold, so I think I'll take my winter coat to the dry cleaner to get it ready for a new season.

I look forward to the fireplace (at my parents’ place, of course), an evening warm bath with lots of foam and candles on the edge (also at my parents', by the way, I don't have a bath), homemade mulled wine, thick knitted wool sweaters, mistletoe, presents under the tree, and secretly also lounging on the couch in my Uggs (which I do have). Winter is approaching and whether you like it, like I do, or not, there's no escaping it. With these things, you'll be winter ready and you'll see that cold, dark days can actually be quite nice.

Besides that you should already get a bag of salt and a shovel at home (although I assume a man will scrape my snow-covered sidewalk clean), there are also other things to prepare for winter.

Treat yourself to a trip to Skins Cosmetics and buy a nice winter scented candle from Diptique. ‘Feu de Bois’ smells like a crackling fireplace and is delightful for the cold days.

Waking up in the dark, I will never get used to that. The Phillips wake up light makes it a bit easier for you. Half an hour before your alarm goes off, it already gives a little light and that gets stronger. When the alarm finally goes off, you can choose the good old radio, the good old alarm sound (then you can be sure you won't oversleep), but you can hold on to summer a little longer if you choose birdsong or the waves of the sea. Now that's a chill way to wake up.

Buy a nice jar of rich body lotion to properly moisturize your legs and arms every morning. In winter, your skin needs more nourishment, otherwise it dries out quickly or you get a kind of flakes on your legs. You can't start moisturizing early enough to prevent that.

Chilly weather also gives dry lips and loose skin flakes. Make sure you always have a lip balm on hand. Eight hour cream from Elizabeth Arden is a classic, but not everyone likes the scent. Chanel and La Prairie also have very nice ones.

Being cold makes you grumpy , so dress warmly. Invest in a good (and thick) winter coat. Mine cost me a serious fortune, but no breeze gets through and it will definitely last a few years. The same goes for sweaters. Buy real wool, no fake synthetic stuff. That helps much less against the cold and we want the real thing, right?
