5 things we learned
from Kim K’s hairstylist
Although there is a hysteria around here in the editorial office Kim Kardashian I have a sort of allergy to that. I mean, I find her style reversal very interesting too, but otherwise I find it more, excusez-moi, fluff than quality level. There is only one thing that I really find very interesting and that is her vavavoom hairstyles. Because that hair, that hair is just way too cool, always looks good and is envy-inducing.
Jen Atkin is the lady behind all those looks. And also the lady behind the looks of J.Lo, Reese Witherspoon, and Cara Delevingne. When an article appeared in Harper’s Bazaar with her five hair tips, you understand that I had to share that with you immediately. Because let's be honest: with Jen's tips, everyone in the world becomes a little happier.
1.
Postpone your haircut
“Normally, people go to the hairdresser every 8 weeks, but try to postpone the haircut just a little longer. You might have a week of a bad-hair look, but after that, it will look amazing.”
2.
Skip the prep
“I’m very old-school, so I find it unnecessary to use all sorts of prep products. Unless the hair is very, very thin, then it’s necessary. Usually, I use 10 to 15 sprays of the Ocean Mist from Sachajuan. I personally don’t like layering mousses, protective products, and that sort of thing because everything falls out faster. Instead, use dry shampoos on dry hair, because that really gives you volume and texture.”
3.
Always use more
“My signature is good undone waves. To achieve that, you need to wrap sections around a curling iron in different sizes. Never use just one size, but always have several on hand. You don’t want it to look uniform. And pro tip; always hold the curling iron vertically and curl your hair away from your face. And never curl the ends but keep them straight. So, hello undone waves!”
4.
More is more
“For a bride I always find updos work very well. You never know what the day will bring, how long it lasts, and whether they end up drunk on the dance floor. With an updo, it always looks good. If you choose to wear your hair down, go for a lot of hairspray. And, the trick is of course extensions, always clip-ins, never glue, because even if the curl falls out, at least the hair still looks full. Hair always photographs thinner, so go big or go home.’
5.
Fake full hair
“I’m a huge advocate of applying eyeshadow at the hairline when the skin is very pale. It’s all about the picture and it makes the hair look so much healthier and fuller.”
