6 THINGS THAT MAKE YOU LOOK OLDER

When I turned forty (that’s not too long ago, you know), I called myself ‘vintage’. I thought it sounded a lot more pleasant than ‘halfway’, which I find an incredibly confronting title.

Forty-two doesn’t feel much different than thirty-eight, but I do notice that I have different style icons (if you need someone to look up to style-wise, you should Google Nina Garcia) and that I wonder about that starry skirt from Tommy Hilfiger; can I still pull that off?

Hence the list of things that are not a good idea when you have the vintage label.

1. Gray hair

A great idea for everyone, fantastic for our beautiful interns, and also ultra-cool if you’re over sixty, but we should just skip it for a couple of decades.

2. Overly colored hair

You know the type, a color that’s just a bit too bold to cover the gray. I know that coloring at the hairdresser costs you a designer bag a year, but really, please don’t mess around in your bathroom.

3. Too much makeup (but too little isn’t a good idea either)

A lot of foundation and certain eyeshadows settle into your wrinkles and actually emphasize the effects of your ‘aging’. Too little makeup gives off the impression that you don’t care anymore and is never a good idea. My advice; go to a good makeup artist and let them advise you on what makeup suits you now. It could be very different from what you always did. Elles Nijkamp, for example, offers tailored beauty workshops.

4. Sneakers with a tracksuit

Sneakers are fine and actually look youthful. But please wear a cool pair of shorts or a nice skirt on top. If you only keep wearing your tracksuit, you really look like you’ve stepped out of society. Before you know it, you’ll cut your hair too.

5. A crumpled bag

There are women who bought a bag long, long ago and still think it’s hip. I still see someone passing by with a Kipling bag sometimes. Then I sigh softly because, come on, treat yourself to something current, it lifts everything.

6. The mom jeans

I find it a tricky model anyway, but if you’re a bit older, it quickly gives the impression that you don’t get it.
