Animal prints in the house
The line between fashionable and quite wrong in a row
Let me start with the fact that I am crazy about animals (so also about cat Disco and editorial assistant Nola), but I don't necessarily need to have them in the house, including their total baggage of baskets, toys, and food. No, I express my love for animals in something subtler like a little drawing of a deer on the wall. An animal print here and there is nice, but you don't want your house to look like Nel Veerkamp's cottage. Or if you do, then you should especially bring in everything that has even a little to do with wild animals and prints to then combine them all in an extremely over-the-top way. Or you go to the other side, by only placing porcelain cats and whistling bird hangers in one room together. Well, everyone has their thing, but you can also give the animal theme a more subdued place. The line between fashionable and quite wrong is very thin, so keep the following rules in mind.
A little drawing
If you crazy about animals, but it doesn't all have to be too obvious, then you just choose a nice illustration or another piece of art on the wall. There are plenty of beautiful screen prints for sale of cute puppies and fierce bears, and if you get tired of them, you just hang something new.
Animal head
I find a real animal head way too intense, but nowadays you also have them in plastic, cardboard, and wood, which actually makes them even cooler.
Wallpaper
You certainly don't have to cover your entire wall with a leopard print or zebra stripe, because you can also just choose a wallpaper where a subtle animal pops up. Or you choose tactile wallpaper, then you can't see the snake skin, but you can feel it. Oh god, I'm going overboard. But actually, this is quite fun.
Furs
Personally, I am really allergic to bear furs or sheep blankets, but well, it is very trendy, it helps you stay warm during the winter months, and nothing is more romantic than a little chat by the fireplace. So it can work.
Furniture
Well, if all those details are not enough for you, then you naturally move on to the bigger stuff. Whole sofas, chairs, or tables. But be a little careful not to go too far with that, because then you will live even faster in a house of Nel Veerkamp, and then you can read this post from top to bottom again.
Limit
Always limit yourself to one item in the house where the animal print can be exaggeratedly present. I understand that you love to mix and match, but it quickly goes a bit wrong if you choose multiple animal prints. One is really enough. Less is more.
Be original
I understand that you quickly place a bear fur on a wooden floor or that a leopard print matches nicely with black/white tones, but be a little original. You can definitely add some color to the animal life. Flora and fauna, remember?
Invest
If you choose one item in the house and it is a bit more expensive, just choose wisely. Often you want something to last longer than a few seasons (apart from a drawing or animal head). So think carefully about it, because it is indeed an eye-catcher, and you don't just put that outside the door within a month.
