That you can both have a very different kind of love for beauty is proven by opposites and Amayzine’s beauty editors Coco & Josselin. While one screams ‘full and striking’, the other says ‘subtle and small’. Coco prefers to apply foundation, but Joss prefers a light powder in the summer. What is the most practical thing to do?
Coco: “What I always find very important with a foundation is to start with a primer. This way, your foundation not only lasts longer but also protects the skin from harmful substances from the outside. Then apply the foundation with a CLEAN sponge. There are a lot of bacteria on your hands, so it's better not to use them. Make sure to evenly distribute the foundation over your entire face. If you skip a spot, it will be very noticeable. Applying it does take some work, but hey, you have to do something for a flawless skin.”
Josselin: “I also really like a foundation, but with these temperatures, summer is literally in and on my head, so I adjust my makeup accordingly. So, I always use powder foundation in high temperatures. Then I have no chance of running and it mattifies and covers well. In terms of application, it’s also easier because you have a nice powder puff with which you can evenly distribute the powder and apply it transparently. It’s just very easy to apply. So, another powder is not needed at all.”
The winner: Josselin wins the first round. Foundation is nice, but powder is easier to apply and doesn’t require a lot of skill and patience.
Coco: “Foundation doesn’t really lend itself to bright sun or the beach. Due to the non-breathable structure, your skin breathes less. Sweat causes your pores to clog (which leads to bad skin) and everything doesn’t stay in place (which leads to a runny skin). Therefore, I would skip a plastered face while sunbathing.”
Josselin: “Like Coco, I’m also not a fan of a huge makeup face while sunbathing. So I would actually skip a powder foundation too. However, there are brands like Clinique and Vichy that have special sun powders. They cover, mattify, and protect against the sun without making it look like you’ve created a whole mask.”
The winner: Actually, Josselin and Coco both don’t want a point, but we still have to award it to Joss. If you do want to wear something, then a powder is the most practical because it also has an extra sun protection in it.
Coco: “As I said before, a foundation stays extra long with a primer. I generally never touch up my foundation because it always covers well throughout the day. A touch-up with foundation is hardly necessary. I might fade a bit during the day, but then I just throw a bronzer (https://amayzine.com/nl/2015/joss-coco-the-battle-bronzer-versus-highlighter/) over it.”
Josselin: “In winter, I always choose foundations because the coverage is just a bit better, but in summer, powders work just fine. You already have a tan from the sun, and you only need to mattify and hide a blemish here and there. Then they do well. Nowadays, there are so many types of powders that you can choose between high coverage or just mattifying. So much choice. So many good products.”
The winner: Josselin. Again. It’s getting a bit boring, but you understand that we are writing this piece in the height of summer and thus the preference leans towards powders. And if the coverage and effect of the day are also good, then it’s easy to win.
Overall, Josselin has simply scored all three points with flying colors. In summer, it’s nice to have as little on your face as possible, so a powder suffices quickly. If you need extra coverage, a foundation works perfectly fine, but if you love the natural look and only need some mattifying and light coverage, then the powder is also for you.
1. This foundation is really very covering, lasts all day, and can also withstand a splash of water. It is oil-free, so the chance of clogged pores is therefore smaller.. Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof, €34.50, M.A.C via Douglas.
2. If you have an oily skin that quickly starts to shine, this one is really for you. The foundation has a fairly thin structure but still covers well enough. It’s also nice that it stays on all day. Infallible 24H-Matte, €15.95, L’Oréal via Douglas
3. This is a very light foundation that you can quickly apply directly to your skin. It feels like a layer of water goes over it. The foundation is lightly covering, so that’s fine for daytime. This one feels a bit greasier than the other two; this is probably due to the silicone ingredient. Dream Wonder Nude, €14.49, Maybelline via Wehkamp
2.
1. Not only is the box incredibly luxurious and has a high desirability factor, the powder itself is worth buying. It is a neutral powder but mattifies like the best and gives a soft, but certainly not overpowering glow.
Poudre de Lumière, €52.90, Lancôme via Douglas
2. This is ideal in summer. It actually works perfectly on oily skin, but in summer we all need something extremely mattifying. This does the job. No exciting glow, but a perfect coverage that doesn’t allow a drop of sweat.
Anti-Blemish solutions powder make-up, €28, Clinique via Douglas
3. Also a favorite, because this has a light glow, without shine. You get it, right? No heavy drop on the forehead, but just a nice shine over your whole face. And still mattifying. You know, it’s actually just a wonder for everyone.
Mineralize powder, €29.50, M.A.C Cosmetics via Douglas
