Amayzine

Since I could hardly get above my desk with all those nice beauty products we have here in the editorial office, Coco is my new close friend. Hysterical, but oh so fun as she is, she dives into all the craziness and colorful finds, and I will continue to delve into all the other beautiful and delicious things in the beauty wealth. And because Coco always makes a splash here with the most colorful nails and bright lips, I immediately roped her in for the Beauty Q&A.

Morning ritual

“The first thing I shouted in the editorial office of Amayzine.com was that I hate mornings. I'm really not at my best at the beginning of the day. I prefer not to talk for the first hour, haha. That's why I often take my time in the morning. Preferably a refreshing shower, a nice dab of my favorite organic day cream from De Tuinen, and a generous layer of concealer and mascara. Then I sit down at the table looking a bit more presentable to have a calm breakfast. By the way, this is a ritual from the last year. Starting your day in a rush is catastrophic for a morning witch like me, I can tell you. My loved ones can surely tell you that too. Then I hop on my bike to the nice Amayzine office, which is just a few minutes away from me. Enough time to listen to BNR Nieuwsradio for a bit, so I'm up to date with all the troubles in the world. Then I can keep myself busy with the nicer things in life all day. Like makeup for example, haha.”

5 minutes make-up

“Concealer, mascara, and eyeliner are almost a matter of life and death for me. Oh oops, lip stuff too. Without the rest of my makeup bag, I can still manage. For a few hours at least, haha.”

Eyebrows or eyelashes?

“Oh lord, Coco without eyelashes is like Mrs. Wintour without her shades. So if I have to choose, I will definitely go for sexy eyelashes. I like to use two different mascaras: one for volume and one for length. But I certainly don't leave my eyebrows in the hairy cold. They are taken care of bi-weekly with threads by my Turkish heroine Saadet. This hairdresser on Ceintuurbaan is really the brow queen of Amsterdam!”

Favorite perfume?

“My absolute favorites are undoubtedly the fragrances from Chanel. Very secretly, I sometimes cheat on them with La Vie Est Belle from Lancôme. Shhh!”

Nails

“I find well-groomed hands very important for women. My grandma always called it ‘your own business card.’ That's why I often make a party out of it. A glitter here, a funky color there. Very sweet Chinese people at Albert Cuyp always take care of my gel nails. It sometimes goes wrong; I walk around for two weeks with poop-yellow nails that clash with every outfit. But hey, we can always return to our comfort zones.”

Beauty clown

“I call myself a beauty clown, yes. Not because I don't understand how it all works, but because I always make such stupid blunders. Walking to the toilet in a restaurant all polished and full of flair, only to come back with toilet paper stuck to my pants. That's Coco. And as I just mentioned, I find it cool to try things out. I remember when dark purple lips were just in. I just slap it on. So I don't find something extreme easily, although a bright blue lipstick goes just a bit too far for me. Just then, huh.”

Million dollar tip

“You make a really nice home, garden, and kitchen mask for your hair with egg, olive oil, and honey. Just try it, your hair will shine at least as much as a Jimmy Choo patent pump.”

Budget

“I have a lipstick addiction, so I think I spend at least 40 euros a month on it. Wow, that's bad, right? I might need to try a month of lipstick fasting. Paradoxically, I've been using the same day cream for a number of years. Since I'm hitting the big 30, I think it's time to invest a bit more in creams, I'm afraid.”

Beauty blunder

“Cheap facial wax strips are really ter-ri-ble. Darting around for a few days a month with red stripes above your mouth is so not charming. I prefer to let my eyebrow specialist remove those few hairs above my lip with threads.”
