Liesbeth and her new favorite jacket
There are a few clothing items that are essential in every wardrobe. They are basics, pieces that form the building blocks for the rest. Think of it as salt, pepper, olive oil, vinegar – those things you always have at home, even I do. For me, those basics include a good pair of jeans, a good LBD, a black blazer, a leather jacket, and a denim jacket. Last week, a new basic piece arrived at the editorial office: a bright white denim jacket from Levi’s. Looks really nice, but a white jacket? There's no way I can keep that white. But Josselin had an idea.
“Why don’t you pimp that jacket, then you’ll see a lot less of any stains.” Yeah, great idea Joss, but not all of us are blessed with your creative talent. “Oh come on, I’ll just bring some fabric markers to the editorial office and we’ll make something beautiful out of it.” So lovely of Joss, she has a crafting corner at home (that’s what I call her workspace) full of trinkets and bits to make everything look its best. So off we went.
“I think it’s also more aesthetically responsible this way,” said May.
You should know, Joss has the most beautiful handwriting ever but can also create amazing illustrations, as you’ve seen often enough here on the site. The idea was quickly formed, we take a quote from Sex and the City and draw around it all the things that are my favorites. On the back, because business in the front, party in the back. So there had to be a Proenza, a glass of wine, Easter eggs, a pair of super high heels, and of course, naturally, an image of Poes Disco and some cat paws. Joss first drew the cat on the jacket, and that cat was so incredibly cute that we started to doubt whether the rest should actually be on it. “I think it’s also more aesthetically responsible this way,” said May.
So after some deliberation, we decided to keep it that way. Just one paw on the front, a meow by the jacket pocket, and further the mega cute cat on the back. Simple and “clean” (Jet’s input), and therefore all the more fun.
And how cool is it that I can now say I have a Levi’s jacket with illustrations by Josselin Bijl, who will have her own exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in a few years (mark my words). Anyway, it’s actually much more fun to personalize those basic pieces. I’m going to go through my wardrobe again and see what could use a little makeover. Joss, will you bring your markers again? By the way, anyone who feels a crafting urge coming on, I’m very curious to see what you’re going to make. So definitely post a photo on Instagram with hashtag #Amayzine and tag @levis_nl so we can take a look. Good luck!
