why I don't want to be on Snapchat

I think that of all the online people I follow on Instagram, at least 70% is constantly posting photos with the following text: “Want to see more? Follow me on Snapchat!” It drives me crazy because I don’t have Snapchat and I want to keep it that way, but I keep missing everything. People keep asking me why I’m not on Snapchat and I think I’m one of the few (along with May, Joss, and Jet) who does “something” online and still isn’t on Snapchat.

Now I must immediately admit that I also refused for years to start using Instagram, and as we all know, I have given in and now I really can’t live without it. About two years ago, I was out to dinner with friends. Esmee van Rijn Sophia Tienstra and , who were already very actively Instagramming. I was still way too busy with Twitter and couldn’t even think about maintaining an extra account, so I stubbornly held my ground. Anyway, I eventually started and the more I enjoyed Instagram, the more I neglected Twitter. By now, my Twitter account is almost dead and the only thing I do there is occasionally retweet something., Another reason is that I really don’t understand the app at all and even after it has been explained to me several times by different people, it remains a big mystery to me.

Just for that reason, I don’t want to start using Snapchat because I have way too much fun on Instagram. But another reason is that I really don’t understand the app at all and even after it has been explained to me several times by different people, it remains a big mystery to me. What I understand is that some videos or photos remain visible and those are called “stories,” some things only stay on screen for a few seconds, you can’t see how many followers you have, and all the images you post can be very ugly (allowed to be). Or something.

Look, I totally get that there’s something very nice about Snapchat. On Instagram, we showcase the best version of our lives.

and it’s all just a facade. Even when your life is in shambles, there’s always a filter that can cover that up. That’s not the case with Snapchat; videos and photos can be posted in poor quality because they disappear anyway. And you don’t see how many followers someone has, so that status symbol isn’t there either. But still, I don’t want it. Digital revolution, no one said it would be fun.

Sometimes I’m ashamed that I pretend to be so hip and digital, but I’m totally

shutting myself off from Big Digital Things. I’ve never pinned anything on Pinterest in my life, I have no idea how to upload a video on YouTube, I wouldn’t even know how to find Google Plus, I find Snapchat too complicated, and now Periscope is suddenly the thing but I’m also pushing that aside. So I’ll say it one more time: no, I’m not going on Snapchat. Maybe we’ll create an account with Amayzine someday “because we have to,” but @LiesbethRasker is not going to happen.. And then you’ll see, huh, in a year I’ll never post anything on Instagram again and I’ll fill Snapchat all day long with my stuff. Because don’t think for a second that I have any form of backbone. Digital revolution, no one said it would be fun.
