4 fun vegetarian restaurants in the Netherlands
When I think of a vegetarian restaurant, I quickly think of a dusty restaurant and, to be honest, that is often the case. Well actually: it was. Since going veggie cool hip stuff is (or flexitarian, then you eat fish), many more restaurants are cooking delicious vegetarian dishes with only plant-based products. And you will be surprised at how incredibly varied and tasty that can be. I mention 4 nice restaurants (and thus not dusty) in the country that have an extensive vegan menu.
Amsterdam
First up: De Kas. Just seeing how the restaurant looks... It's completely made of glass and is located in a piece of green Amsterdam. Namely in Park Frankendael, where there is plenty of space for a large vegetable garden. The menu is determined by the harvest of the day and the wine list features many delightful options. This is a really nice place for a romantic (party) evening with friends or as a couple.
The Hague
Bøg is quite new in the city. It is a Scandinavian restaurant and if they are good at anything with veggies and cooking with lots of vegetables, it is there. There is even a whole vegetable menu. For flexitarians, there is a menu with fish and vegetables. Bøg has a wonderfully friendly staff and is very welcoming to the vegan people among us.
”And that menu is gigantic, so make sure you come to the table with a good appetite”
Rotterdam
At Dertien, cooking is pure and freshly done. On a huge plate, what am I saying: a letter tray. Behind the bar, you will find the menu. And that menu is gigantic, so make sure you come to the table with a good appetite. The two owners and chefs Remco and Pepijn cook honestly and with seasonal products. They work with organic suppliers with whom the chefs have a good and almost friendly relationship. If you can taste love in the food anywhere, it is here.
Utrecht
Le Jardin is the restaurant for vegetable enthusiasts. There is more vegetable on your plate than fish or meat. Le Jardin breathes green, primal, and garden. Even the menu reminds you of a piece of tree bark. ‘Vegetable cuisine’ is what owner Lars Mooren calls it. And maybe you think now: how dull and how quaint, but it really isn't. There is an amazing indoor garden and a lot of attention has also been paid to flowers.
