5X PERFECT CITY TRIPS FOR SOLO TRAVELERS
It's hot: traveling solo and exploring the world. But it's of course quite exciting to go out alone for the first time, I get it. Several times I stood alone with sweaty armpits at Schiphol, because help. But in the end: you are stronger than you think and on a solo trip you experience things you would never experience otherwise. It's a life-enriching experience, really. My friends from Stay.com have compiled the ultimate list of the most relaxing city trips for solo travelers and I don't want to keep that from you. On y va!
1. Edinburgh
London is beautiful, but we know it by now, right? Want something different? Then go to the Scottish city of Edinburgh (pronounced as ‘ed·din·burrow’). Everything here is within walking distance, the center has a beautiful old architectural style and you will find countless cozy cafes where you absolutely must order a tea + scone. Did someone say scone? I'm on it!
2. NYC
New York City (May and Elke just came from there) is a city that has something for everyone: mega-cool restaurants, inspiring museums, shop till you drop opportunities times a thousand, cool coffee spots, countless yoga schools, and of course a nightlife that fits ‘the city that never sleeps’. It's the perfect city to spend a few days alone in. Travel friends are almost handed out on the street. Tip: rent a bike and take your time to explore the city. Limit yourself to a few neighborhoods so you don't waste too much time in the crowded subways. And this way you experience the city more like a real local. Hotels in New York can be terribly expensive, especially when traveling alone. But hey, you just tackle that problem with an Airbnb.
3. Lisbon
Lisbon has become quite trendy in the last year. And I completely understand why: the mild climate, the perfect location by the coast for tanning, the historic center, and the delicious food. Also nice: Lisbon is a good budget destination and you can shop well there.
4. Bangkok
Looking for a more adventurous solo adventure? Then Bangkok is the place to be. A bit longer flight but so be it, for the solo experience it's definitely worth it. A visa is free and you can stay in luxury hotels for a good price (or choose a hostel). Since Bangkok is a hub for travel throughout Southeast Asia, it's a great place to meet other solo friends. You can shop fantastically, at every street corner you find delicious street food or a good restaurant, and if the solo stress has really hit you, just book a relaxing Thai massage for a few euros?
5. Copenhagen
Copenhagen is a TOP destination for people who love fashion and interior design. The coffee is the best there (definitely go to the Coffee Collective), everyone eats healthy (and you can see that on their bodies) and there are plenty of cool museums.
With the metro, tram, and bus you can get everywhere, but you can also choose to just walk around. Or do as the locals do and rent a bike! It's less than an hour and a half flight from Amsterdam and with the good metro network, you can be in the city center in no time. Will you send me a postcard?
