Fun & Famous
Elle versus Vogue
It's that time again. The September issues of ‘the magazines’ are in stores or bursting with a ‘wohf’ on your mat. These are the thickest issues of the year that have been worked on with even more love than all the other issues. Come on, another fashion series, an even more famous (preferably) Dutch model on the cover, another destination for the shoot, and the most and most beautiful advertisements.
Amayzine has the tradition of letting the biggest fashion magazines in the country, Vogue and Elle or Harper’s Bazaar (it just depends on our mood), battle it out. We sharpen the knives (just look at how it went down) and Liesbeth brought her flat, digital kitchen scale to the editorial office especially for the occasion. How Liesbeth got such a thing is still unclear to us, because Liesbeth is known for a lot of things (you find her guilty pleasures and there are quite a few), but she has always managed to hide her cooking skills very well. here Now my regular sparring partner Liesbeth has of course flown away. The funny thing about this story is that Liesbeth is now featured with her very first column in Elle, so she’s still around for a while. Luckily, I found a worthy successor in Kiki who defends team Elle with all her might. Fasten your seatbelts, here we go.here Ha, I’ll win this easily. Vogue has called in Vera van Erp for their September cover. Now Vera is a) a friend of the house (our house, that is) and b) an internationally top model from Dutch soil. Also kudos to team Elle because they also have a Dutch model on the cover (that has always been their nice tradition, but sometimes they come up with an international cover which I understand because it’s cheaper, but I find it a pity because it’s tradition), but this girl just peeks around the corner and doesn’t yet have the allure and looks of Vera. But what’s not there….
Advertisements.
Cover
Look, that’s the cork that the magazine floats on. Those beautiful series need to be paid for. Moreover, those advertisements are so beautiful that you would almost pay extra to have them in your magazine. Just look at the fall/winter collection from Chanel and Gucci, for example. And that of Louis Vuitton. Elle wins this category, as they have 59 advertisement pages compared to 53 at Vogue. Value for your money In other words: the number of pages. At Vogue, you get 268 pages of fashion fun, at Elle 228. Also a lot, but just a bit less.
In the bonus
Although I’m team Vogue, I want to say that I really enjoy the editorials by Edine Russel, the editor-in-chief of Elle. Just wanted to mention that. Kiki praises the fashion report from Elle that was photographed in the center of Amsterdam. And all series are self-shot, so not purchased. And Lies' column of course, how nice for her. Vogue features a beautiful tribute by Fiona Hering to Bill Cunningham, a lovely interview with Kajsa Ollongren, the stylish and steadfast councilor of Amsterdam. What we found remarkable is that Pepijn Lanen (author and singer of De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig) has apparently settled so much into his writer's groove that he has written a piece for both Vogue and Elle.
All in all, the thick, heavy Vogue (we didn’t even need Lies' scale for that) narrowly won. But long, warm days are coming, so I would say: buy them both.
