Fashion dilemma of the week
Help! There's a dress code on my wedding invite
That the wedding season ’on’ I already told you last week. And no matter what the weather is planning in the Netherlands, you definitely have a great outfit. Just read here. But what you might still be worried about after reading my fashion dilemma last week is that damn dress code at the bottom of that great invitation is. Because I totally understand that you don't have the perfect look ready for tenue de soirée or tenue de ville. Or maybe after a quick Google search, you're still wondering if there's even a difference between cravate noir and tuxedo. No worries, no panic: I'm going to tell you everything about the most common dress codes, the do's and don'ts, and how to never arrive under- or overdressed at the party in the coming weeks.
”The matchy-matchy idea is really fun, but don't go overboard with the colors. If you're wearing a blue dress, not all your jewelry and accessories need to be blue too”
Cutout brushed-satin gown, €2,895 Victoria Beckham Pumps, €525 Jimmy Choo Clutch, €1,100,- Gucci Mixed earrings, €39,- & Other Stories
Tenue de soirée
Also known as white tie, white bow tie or cravate blanche. We start right away with the strictest dress code rules. So take your evening gown out of the closet. Because there is little to no skin visible due to the length of the dress, a stylish décolleté or a beautiful low back is a must. And if you really want to stick to the rules, gloves up to the elbow actually belong with a tenue de soirée.
Lace dress, €1,743 Zimmermann Shoes, €25.95 Zara Flap bag, p.o.a. Chanel Jacket, €42,- Topshop
Cravate noir
The slightly less formal dress code is cravate noir. Also known as black tie, black bow tie or tuxedo. Many different names for basically the same thing: chic and stylish. Is this the dress code on your invitation? Then go for a cocktail dress or long evening gown. Are you a dinner guest? Then it's best to choose an evening gown. Is there no dinner? Then the choice is huge. Well, huge, we are of course going for chic.
Pleated halter dress, €39.99 H&M Cropped jacket, €1,050,- Dolce & Gabbana Blouse, €19.95 Zara Ankle-tie high sandals, €68,- Topshop Crossbody, €245,- Furla
Tenue de ville
Literally means clothing you wear to the city. But this doesn't mean you can walk into the party in your ripped jeans and favorite sweater. Think more of a nice stylish dress or suit. Are you going for a dress or skirt? Then make sure it's not too short. Preferably over the knee. And if you really want to stick strictly to the rules? Then wear tights, because bare legs are actually not the intention with tenue de ville.
Is your dress code not listed? That's not so strange, because after these somewhat stricter rules, your fashion heart will surely beat faster next week. I'm talking about a summer chic and cocktail dress code. But whatever the dress code is, with these looks you'll arrive anything but under- or overdressed at a party.
