Fashion dilemma of the week

How do I rock my favorite summer items even during office hours?

With summer (sale) approaching, you surely have a few fresh beach dresses, festival outfits and cool denim shorts on your list. We all know it, whether we are browsing in a favorite webshop or ending up staring at a shop window in the city. You fall in love. In love with that beach dress, the dress you really need. But really. And that you will wear super often to the beach and on vacation. I want to believe you. And I do. In fact, I’ll take it a step further. Because how nice would it be to wear your favorite summer items at work too? Curious how you can wear that beach dress or playsuit perfectly at the office or an important lunch appointment? I’ll tell you.

Not that I prefer colorful plastic flip-flops or a too tight short at the office. It might be a cheerful sight, but I can imagine that not everyone in the work environment appreciates your bare toes – however well-groomed. In America, fashion gurus agree: flip-flops at the office are a no-go. No matter how high the mercury rises, we prefer to save the flip-flops for the beach. Still in need of some extra oxygen? Go for sandals, nice peep-toes, or slingbacks. Besides your shoe choice, color also plays a big role. It depends a bit on which industry you work in, but no one is happy with a colleague in extremely bright colors or a too intense print opposite you. Prefer neutral colors like white, beige, cream, or for example light or dark blue. The bare legs issue is closely related to the length of your dress, skirt, or shorts. Don’t go much higher than the knee. Then you can be sure it fits well.

”Why that favorite beach dress can work very well at the office? It’s not a too tight or too short model”

Dress with print, €79.95 Zara Leather jacket, €49.95 Mango Sandals, €129,- Ancient Greek Sandals for Peter Pilotto via MyTheresa Sunglasses, €20,- Topshop

Why that favorite beach dress can work very well at the office? It’s not a too tight or too short model. It’s perfect to combine with a nice jacket. Choose a biker jacket or a nice blazer. Edgy or business. With the right jacket, you can create many different looks. And oh, those different looks are definitely there, because in a fashion editorial you surely choose a different jacket than in a law firm.

”Do you love prints? Then choose, for example, a suit in all-over print”

Wide leg pants, €1,100 Valentino via Net-a-porter Dress-up shorts, €690,- Valentino via Net-a-porter Blazer, €980,- Valentino via Net-a-porter Slingback, €29.95 Zara Knitted top, €19.99 H&M

The dress-up shorts are not only fun with a bikini on the beach, no, the name says it all: these trousers also work very well in the workplace. Do you love prints? Then choose, for example, a suit in all-over print. The stores are currently full of them; from designer pieces to an entry-level model from & Other Stories. Are the fans of bare legs hard to find in your workplace? Then opt for wide beach pants. That too is great to combine with a blazer in the same print. Style it off with heels and you’re guaranteed to make a splash at the office.
