HAVE A BAD DAY? HERE'S HOW TO FIX IT.
You know them well. Those mornings when you just know: today is not going to happen. Those days when everything is just awkward. Your clothes are stupid, you're not assertive at work, and you're late everywhere. And of course, your hair looks f*cking terrible and your nails are ugly while you just wanted to wear your peep-toes.
The big question is: can such a day still be saved? Well, I don't want to pat myself on the back or anything, but I can say that I am quite experienced in these kinds of bad days. And I say: I think so. Here are my tips. (And definitely also read these top tips from Jet, about how Monday will no longer be an ‘income day’ forever.)
1. Often the day starts off wrong, namely with you not knowing at all what to wear. Some women then put on something very eye-catching and/or uncomfortable to lift their spirits. But because you don't have the styling vibe (it's a day when everything fails), you often end up wearing something very strange or at least noticeable. And you'll be annoyed by that all day long. Grab something you know works: that one luxurious black dress, those nice jeans, that cozy sweater. Trust your classics.
2. Wear your absolute favorite, ridiculously expensive perfume ever. A nice scent can really lift your spirit.
3. Think of this quote from Henry Ford: ‘Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.’ A bad day is really a self-fulfilling prophecy. Try with all your might to reset yourself.
“And then it's of course a matter of talking to yourself and moving on”
4. Clean up, tidy up! Your closet, your living room, your bedroom – preferably everything. Because a tidy house is a tidy mind. And that brings peace, believe me. You just need to have time to clean up. If not: at least work on a tidy desk. And then quickly move on to the next point.
5. Talk it out. Find a dear friend and (if it really can't be helped) CRY. Yes, this sounds a bit drastic, but man, it feels good. And then it's of course a matter of talking to yourself and moving on. Be careful, choose a good location for your crying session; crying at work under the watchful eye of your boss might not be so smart.
6. You got this. You might think not, but come on lady, you're just a hero. Think back to that one great achievement from last time, reread the email where someone compliments/cheers you on extensively, or grab/read something from yourself that you are extremely proud of.
7. Help someone else. Really, you get a huge boost of positive energy from that! So: call someone who is also going through a tough time and offer a listening ear. Or help a colleague draft a complicated email, it doesn't matter what, just do something for someone else.
8. The temptation is great, but don't cancel things (like drinks, presentations, openings). Do take the pressure off: you don't have to stay until it's light out. Just showing your face is enough. And remember point one: don't overcompensate with complicated heels and super tight skirts. This is a day for classics.
9. And lastly: if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Tomorrow is another day. And know that others really don't see that you're having a bad day. It may feel like you're walking naked down the street, but they just see a very nice woman who has everything totally under control. In fact, they might even get a bad day from your fabulous appearance.
