IS THE BABOUCHE

THE NEW IT SHOE OF 2016?

The bawattes? Right. The babouche. According to fashion experts, this shoe (also known as ‘the Moroccan slipper’) is going to be an absolute hit this year.

It sounds more like an indigenous tribe than a style you can find on Net-A-Porter, but the babouche is a shoe to seriously keep an eye on. You either love it or you find it hideous. The point is, it's going to be a trend and you'll probably see the slipper pop up countless times on your Instagram feed in the coming months.

As with almost every trend, it all started with Céline. Head designer Phoebe Philo –who has made an art of turning ‘ugly’ shoes into highly sought-after items– envisioned a new life for the Moroccan slipper, after which brands like Victoria Beckham, Opening Ceremony, and Narciso Rodriguez also jumped on the babouche trend. Each with their own twist, of course. Move over Birkenstock and orthopedic footwear, this slipper is the new kid on the block.
