New York Fashion Week

In 5 highlights (or lowlights?)

Station 1 of the fashion month circuit is complete. Station New York has passed and the model kids are moving on to London. After the snowstorm and fashion moments, I thought it would be good to catch you up on the highlights of the coldest fashion week of all; that of New York.

1. K is for Can't help but the Kardashians

From the cream white fur parade they put on when they waved Kanye at his show to Kim who gave us an honest insight into the situation of her breasts (which immediately inspired Praxis to launch an advertising campaign and after which the sales of their tape skyrocketed) to that poor North who seeks cover under mama's fur coat and very clearly shouts “NO PICTURES!” I have my opinions about this family, but on the other hand; they don't harm anyone and without them it would be boring again.

2. The show of Marc Jacobs

It started damn two minutes early. Normally, shows start half an hour late. At least. Just as the university has its academic quarter, we have our fashion half hour. Or three quarters of an hour. But Marc Jacobs once got a spanking from Anna Wintour because his show started too late and since then he has been the best-behaved boy in class. At least when it comes to starting on time. I almost missed his last show for Louis Vuitton because I was still looking around at all the street style types until the security people softly whispered to me that the show started in a minute. Marc is Marc is Marc so there had to be a bit of fun in the show. That came in the form of Lady Gaga who walked the catwalk after Kendall Jenner.

3. Disabled and limited

We saw a model with a prosthesis and a girl with Down Syndrome on the catwalk. I hope it was meant with integrity and that all parties were happy with it. Then I won't say anything more about it.

4. The cold, the cold, the cold

Was it spring in New York a month ago (well, sort of), now the feels-like temperature was -25 causing people to often walk backwards through the streets to avoid feeling the cutting wind in their faces.

5. Dutch girls

Yes, there they are again. Our national showpieces are once again prominently in the runway top 50. The model who has walked the most shows is Julie Homans, one of my favorites with 16 shows. Then of course comes ‘our’ Maartje Verhoef who doesn't stop getting even more beautiful with 16 shows. Then Marjan Jonkman (you know, the girl who was discovered at I’m gonna make you a supermodel) with 14 shows, Vera van Erp, Kiki Willems, Imaan Hammam, and Ine Neefs. The latter is Flemish but because I like her so much, she can be in my list.

That was New York, on to London.
