THE LAYER HYSTERIA

How a thin layer suddenly became a thick mess

If you tell someone that you work as a beauty editor , you sometimes get a little chuckle in response. Because people often think that beauty editors go through life with colored lips, heavy smoky eyes, and three layers of colored mascara. And I haven't even mentioned the dreadlocks with colored strands woven in. I can tell you, none of that is true. All the beauty editors I know (with one hysterical exception) live très naturel. And maybe they have a dab of thin foundation on their face and very occasionally a color on their lips, but other than that, it's a naked club that places enormous value on the five-minute ritual in the morning.

Yet some beauty bloggers have been incredibly busy lately with a hysteria and enthusiasm that a beauty editor could learn a thing or two from. Because this takes you a bit longer than five minutes in the morning. Let's say hours. Let's say a whole day. Last week Kiki already wrote about the 100 layers of lipstick, but there are also hysterical videos about 100 layers of foundation, 100 layers of highlighter, and 100 layers of nail polish. So you seriously have too much time on your hands, and you can immediately see that the natural look is not just a real trend that comes back every year. And so you also see that the five-minute – au naturel – ritual was not just chosen as the standard look of a beauty editor and that happy and healthy will always remain the biggest trend.

For some inspiration or just to embrace my favorite trend, take a look at the videos below. It's delightful to train the flexibility of the eyebrows (you lift them up and keep them totally raised throughout the video) or to strengthen the open-mouth muscles again. Oh. My. God.

100 layers of highlighter

Wayne Goss is a makeup artist and knows exactly how to contour and highlight a face in the best way possible. And actually, especially how to just keep it moderate. That's the best. He shows in this video how shine can sometimes be too shiny. Or actually: that your face just looks like a head dipped in flour.

100 layers of lip gloss

Mayra has her own YouTube channel where she isn't shy about a bit of glamour and red carpet feeling. But 100 layers of lip gloss? That’s going to be quite a sticky mess. Especially interesting (which I found fun) is how she removes those 100 layers. So keep watching.

100 layers of foundation

Normally, I would present you all the tips for a thin foundation but Kayle shows you how that thin foundation looks after 100 neat layers. Now you know you really need to clean your face well.

100 layers of concealer

Miss Nicky is always wonderfully hysterical in all her vlogs. Hysterical enough to smear at least 100 layers of concealer on her beautiful skin. Strobing is one thing, but overdoing it is really a second point.

100 layers of mascara

An inflamed eye is of course a huge risk if you leave your layer of mascara on for a while. And you'll be very grateful for this tip if you've clicked on this video. Unless you really love the clump trend.
