The story behind Kiki's very first email address

After a long time of pleading, my father created my first digital mailbox for me when I was about twelve years old. It was simply necessary for MSN and it was crucial that I could be on MSN . “Otherwise my friends will think I'm dead, dad, everyone has MSN these days.”

No idea if that strong argument convinced him, but the fact was: I got an email address and therefore MSN. Kikid0605@hotmail.com became the email address I had to work with. The ‘d’ for my last name, the ‘0605’ for my birthday on May 6. The numbers ’92 (year of birth) absolutely could not be at the end, because god yes, then all the cool boys would see how old I was. Dad almost turned it into engerikenlaatmemetrustikbenjong@hotmail.com, but if it had been allowed, I probably would have gotten that.

”Still, May and I agree that @hotmail.com just doesn't sound that cool anymore”

Later, I replaced ‘kikid0605’ myself with the much cooler kiki_mii@hotmail.com. As in the English ‘me’, I am Kiki. Look at me being mii. But really cool, right? Breezercool. For all the employees of Groupon, Actiedeals, and Hotelkamerveiling; yes, that email address still exists. You email there very often and that's why it has been bombarded to spam box. The spam box feels like noses at a flea market. Among all the digital trash I occasionally fish out a gem and well, that means I can't say goodbye to kiki_mii yet.

Still, May and I agree that @hotmail.com just doesn't sound that cool anymore. Hotmail makes us think a bit of 2006 and by now there are so many cool email addresses that it might also be smart to show your contacts that you keep up with the times and can also communicate according to the modern rules of the mailbox. The absolute kicker was the email address of an old school friend: Tipsy_merlijne@hotmail.com. Of course completely inspired by the then strongly articulated song ‘Ewrbody in da club gettin’ tipsy’. Or what do you think of my sister's prehistoric email address (sorry Malou, here you go): domblondjethebest@hotmail.com. No one protects us from this kind of nonsense, right? No one.

Anyway, I'll make it easy for you. Which mailboxes actually can't anymore? Warning: get ready for an @ sign orgy. Here they come: @hotmail of course. @upcmail and @xs4all sound like they belong to your father-in-law, just not really cool, just like @ziggo (sorry Ziggo users). What is still perfectly fine? @gmail.com of course. And @live.nl. The coolest at the moment? @amayzine.com of course. But first you have to apply I fear.
