THE WHITE SUIT OF HILLARY
Because everyone rolls out the red carpet and pops the Veuve Clicquot when I comment on Hillary Clinton's clothing (this piece led to three columns, an interview on Radio 1 where I was accused of ‘internalized sexism’, I decided to dive back into my laptop after last night's debate.
Because what turned out? Hillary actually followed my first advice! A cream white suit I find at least as powerful and just a bit more original than the look of 'look at me pulling all the attention to myself' red.
Although I understand the red a bit better in retrospect, because this suit was of course part of the patriotic triptych where Hillary wore a different color of the American flag for each debate.
I thought Hillary looked approachable and warm because of the color and material choice and at the same time businesslike due to the high closure, but now the rest of the world went wild. Here’s an overview of the tweets about Hillary's look and the people her clothing choice was compared to.
But if you are compared to a look with Luke Skywalker, Olivia Pope, Tupac Shakur, Claire Underwood, and Beyoncé – and thus are in the list of at least three style queens – I can only draw the cautious conclusion that this was a prrrima suit.
