UPGRADE YOUR CLOSET IN 7 STEPS
I know: it's freezing -3, but I still have summer on my mind. I had the cleaners come for an extra afternoon to get the house ready for spring and just spoke to the gardener for his biannual visit to my little green patches.
And now it's time for the closet. The winter clothes went to the attic (at that time I still thought it was really going to be spring). A bit unfortunate that the hook of my attic hatch broke so I can't get up there for now, but so be it. The summer clothes are within reach, now to make my closet ready for spring and I'll do that like this.
1. Everything out
I repeat: everything out. Throw your clothes on your bed, put your shoes on the floor and go at it with a cloth and some green soap. You'll be shocked by the amount of dust that has accumulated in your closet.
2. The selection
Go through each piece of clothing one by one and think about how long it's been since you wore it and how likely it is that you'll wear it soon. I fill two boxes. In one I put items that I'm going to sell on King's Day, in the other I keep the clothing pieces that I'm still not completely sure about. If I regret it, they'll be nearby.
3. Go through your hangers critically
Of course, I only have the white wooden hangers from Ikea. But still, intruders keep sneaking into my closet. Especially those thick luxurious ones that you should be very happy with but that take up ridiculous amounts of precious closet space. Out with them.
4. Pantyhose in boxes
At Ikea, they have very nice round boxes in different sizes where you can store underwear, swimsuits, pantyhose and other less photogenic clothing. You can stack them nicely in your closet. Just wait until you see how happy you are when you open your closet in the morning.

5. Scent in your closet
You know the good old scent pouches, of course. I'm a sucker for the ones from Zwitsal and if I see an old-fashioned lavender sachet somewhere, I buy it immediately. But you can also put a nice scented candle in your closet. Even without lighting it, it will spread fragrance. What also gives me a warm feeling of happiness (yes yes, nothing superficial is strange to me) is a ‘scented oval’ from Diptyque. That's an oval-shaped object with a kind of candle wax in the middle with the most delicious scent. You can also place a piece of soap between your underwear or put that super cool room spray from Skins Cosmetics disguised as a deluxe plant sprayer in your dressing room. Jet has the Sycamore Fig and I think it's lovely.
6. Everything by color and theme
I work in my closet from light to dark and also try to work by theme. My party dresses hang together, my blazers, my skirts, and my pants. This way I have an overview immediately and know where I need to be.
7. Tip from Connie Breukhoven
Yes, haha. I think about her every day. In an interview for Beau Monde, she gave her golden closet tip: make sure that everything hanging in your closet is in order. Everything is clean, all buttons are attached, and everything fits. This way, you prevent having a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.
