WHAT SHOULD A HIP PERSON WEAR TO A WEDDING?
Okay, I have a wedding on Friday. And I really don't know what to wear. That's quite a thing, of course. Luckily, this checklist will help me. Thanks to our shopping editor Lilian Brijl. Oh, and at the bottom, you'll find my personal top five outfits. Who knows, there might be something for you in there too.
1. Stay true to yourself! Before you know it, you’ll get caught up in a frantic search for The Perfect Outfit. The result is often a strange, exaggerated, or just super standard outfit that no one likes, including you. The mega tip is to try to stay true to yourself; otherwise, you'll feel uncomfortable all day (and radiate that) and it will be a STUPID day.
2. In blind outfit panic, don’t suddenly seek refuge in a store or brand that feels foreign to you. The chance is high that you’ll come home with something that just doesn’t feel right. You never buy anything from that place, so why now?
3. Where's the sex appeal? It doesn't have to be too proper. A décolletage or a bare leg (or two) is perfectly fine. However – yes, now it gets complicated – it shouldn't be too much either. You're not going out with your girlfriends; you're going to a wedding.
4. Pay attention to your lingerie, especially if you choose an off-shoulder style or a (modest) cut-out. A fun detail like that is great, but keep in mind that it involves more than just a cool look. The lingerie suddenly plays a role too.
5. By the way, a cut-out is really a nice plan. There are basic dresses with a cut-out, which add something trendy to a classic look.
”Don't overdo it on ‘festive’ just because it has to be ‘festive’”
6. Don't overdo it on ‘festive’ just because it has to be ‘festive’. There are people (I won't name names) who go all out for a wedding. They stuff themselves full of long gloves, hats, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Until they look like a Christmas tree.
7. Really stay away from skin-colored tights. Even if it's still ‘a bit chilly’ outside. The most awkward thing about skin-colored tights is that the tone never matches well: a bit like totally wrong foundation. The unpleasant thing about skin-colored tights is also the dull, old-fashioned appearance. Oh, and you can really see them, those tights. Let there be no misunderstanding about that.
8. Think outside the box. A suit can and is allowed. There are suits in 2016 with really nice fits (flared or pencil), super cool prints, and made from special materials. If you choose a nice wide pant, go for a slightly more fitted jacket and a feminine blouse.
9. A commonly heard tip, but it’s really true: black is not a good plan (in terms of high depressive content) and very light colors are definitely not smart because you’ll come too close to the color of the bride's dress.
Here’s my top five! Make the most of it.
